But the fields are not as deep this year. The 1500 and 1600 would be a joke. Drake changes its premier events every year based on the fields.
The boys 1600 will be a joke this year? The 1600 will be quicker this year then last year at drake and state. I think and only time will tell but there a 3 to 5 kids that can go sub 4:10 this year.
If the Drake mile is held, the 1500 and 1600 woud be a joke. Heidesch ran 4:02 for the mile indoor. Several other guys expressed interest in adding a HS mile. It wasn't just Heidesch. It was the entire field that caused the event to be added.
And you are sounding crazy to suggest that Drake will be faster this year. Heidesch ran 4:01 (1600). Washburn ran 4:05. Nash and Lauman ran 4:12 in the slow heat. Eight guys broke 4:15 on the year. Nine girls broke 4:38. It was the deepest year in history. To suggest that the next year would be better makes no sense.

I sound crazy, there was no slow heat of 1600 at drake, there was one heat of 1600. I’m not one that don’t know actual distance of elite mile race vs 1600. I was talking 1600 as according to you there will be no elite mile this year. 4 that broke 4:15 are back and you don’t think anyone else will step up, Flori could, Dunham could there’s 6 sub 4:15 already, Maybe Droacher. So like I said the 1600 will be quicker this year. Could even take a quicker qualifying time to get there.
Yes, the slow heat. The mile included the top kids and the rest were in the 1600. The mile included an FAT 1600 making it an official 1600 where Heidesch broke the state record. If someone runs 4:02 for the mile indoor this year, the mile will be added back at Drake. But the girls' field is not as good as last year either which impacts the decision. You should have run faster last year in order to get into the mile instead of being in the slow heat.
There will never be another year like last year. We had 8 guys sub 4:15 and 9 girls sub 4:38. Heidesch and Noe are the best all time.
“Never” is a long time. No reason to believe Iowa won’t have some big competitive years in the next 25+ years, and it could happen relatively soon if last year was a harbinger or indicative of a trend.
Odds are against any current Iowa HS kids surpassing Heidesch’s resume, but there’s certainly some promising young talent. Zuber, Merrick, Dunham, Flori, the Gilbert freshmen…lots of kids with a chance to smash 9 minutes.
I’m not sure if Noe is the Iowa HS GOAT. She’s tier 1 for sure, but Katie Flood ran 4:28/9:27 + won some 800 titles, won three 4A XC titles and set a state meet record, and won NXN (admittedly when it was less competitive). She and a couple of others still belong in the discussion.
Any idea what became of Flood? I know she had a great few years at UW and showed a lot of potential.
