Trey Caldwell looked great running a 14:55 at Crystal Springs (2.95 miles) this past weekend. It was hot with unrelenting sun out there, on a very tough course. Put him on a faster course with cooler temps, I bet he'll crank a great time.
14:55 at crystal springs is very unimpressive even at 90 degree weather.

That is very hard to believe considering midwest is allowed to wears spikes in their races. Spikes help a lot more than people think it does. In addition, the course looked very fast. The course would have to be quite a bit longer than a 5k for the performances to be equivalent
That would also put Hunter Jones at German Fernandez's best cross country performance / california's best performance ever. German Fernandez could run a 4:01 mile and 2 hours later run a 8:35 3200 by himself. Hunter Jones couldn't break 8:40 with super shoes in a competitive field that pushed him.
Yep, the track shows how good you really are. He could also be a lot better at cross country than track, if so he should have won the national championships. Here is an all-time list I found for woodward park - you can look up anyone in the top 31-all time, everyone had very outstanding resumes.

Does anyone know if 80s footlocker was easier than 2000s footlocker? These conversion don't make any sense. Woodward park should be around 25 seconds faster than balboa park.

Sounds about right. However, that conversion also applies everywhere else in the country. Lots of people who make it to the national races don't perform well at all. Their taper has already worn off and they start losing fitness and they already had a long season. In California's case, everyone tapers for state. If a California runner were to make it to Footlocker, that is 3 weeks of hoping to sustain fitness after a taper. It is not sustainable. Other regional races are further away from the national race so runners can get fitness back after a taper.
I know for me, my tapper will only last for 1 week. After that, I will slowly start to lose fitness. I would bet 4/5 of runners that make it to footlocker had their best race at their regional race, state race or maybe an early invitational. Most likely the regional race.
My advice for really fast California runners is to not taper for the state meet. If they don't make NXN, then tapper for Footlocker West Regionals or Runninglane Nationals. If they were to make footlocker nationals, then I hope their body can sustain a 2 week taper without losing fitness. (I always did horrible at ca state meet because my coach would start our teams taper cif finals)

For those from CA the State meet is much more important than either Footlocker Weset Regionals or Runninglane. If you aren't 100% on top of your game at State you won't make NXN either, so that makes State the important race at that time.

Matilda Torres won and has 4 sophs on varsity (they were #1,2,5,7 on the team in this race) and a freshman just outside of it. Definitely a team to keep an eye out for the future. The cool thing is that this school was only opened 3 years ago

All this talk about how we won't be very good next year and this year we are "average". We have 5 very stacked teams next year (Buchanan, Beckman, Matilda Torres, MLK, Great Oak). Beckman should be one of the fastest teams in the nation next year. If Glendora and Jserra can find a 5th runner, they could very good too.
As for this year, we have so many very good teams. Dana Hills, Great Oak, Ventura will most likely be the 3 teams going to nike nationals. Each of these teams should place top 10 at nationals. San Clemente, Beckman, Mira Costa, Oakdale, Trabuco Hills are all good enough to place top 5 at runninglane. I hope that the teams that don't make nxn go to runninglane so that a california team can win that meet.

Jesuit CA also. Only 1 senior scoring. Their top 2 are sophomores. They also had a freshman go sub-17 at Clovis

Seeing that. Looked at his state meet time last year, it was 15:21. His Rough Rider time last year was 16:06. Not gonna claim he's Fast Horse or Noonan. But he's doing all right.
For connoisseurs of small school competition, there was a meaningful matchup on the girls side. PrepCalTrack has Immanuel and Crystal Springs Uplands tied for 1st in the statewide rankings. They faced each other at Rough Rider.
Immanuel won it easily. Their first four all finished in the Top 10 of the race. They look tough to beat.
As someone who's run a couple times at Woodward and many times at Crystal and who's compared high level athletes' Woodward and Crystal times a lot, it seems to be around a 15 second difference between both course (Woodward taking longer of course). 14:55 is definitely a good time at crystal though I wouldn't put it much faster than 15:10. Always are outliers though as shown by Aydon Stefanopoulos last year who ran in the 15:30s multiple times at Crystal (with a best of 15:30) followed by 15:14 at States. Another one would be Landon Pretre though he hasn't yet ran all out at Crystal this season but he ran 14:52 at Woodward and there's no chance he can run more than 10 seconds faster than that at Crystal this season (his current PR there is 15:09)
15 seconds is very generous, I ran both courses too. I would say around 25 seconds. Maybe even more seconds since it was such a long time ago since I ran it and my memory is foggy

In the large school girls race, Shea Volkmer of Campolindo won it going away. She ran a 17:49, with second place 40 seconds back at 18:29. Her solo running effort at Rough Rider would have placed her 8th in the Clovis Championship race.
This follows her 4:54 1600 at the mid-season mania meet. She has stepped in nicely to fill the shoes of Ellie Buckley.
