I find it intriguing that you see progressives doubling down in 2028. They may not have that option, though. Remember, Bernie was on track to win the nomination in both 2016 and 2020, until the party stepped in.
There's another irony I see here, and I can't help but point out: the GOP used to be the "big tent party," where all you had to do was ape Michael J Fox's character from "Family Ties" to belong. Now it looks like the Democratic party is in that role; you've got everyone from your young radicals to your retirees united in their hatred of Trump.
Raises an obvious question: what will become of the Democratic party once Trump is gone? (And, for the purposes of the thought experiment, remember that the 2020 election outcome didn't really matter in terms of making him irrelevant, so I doubt an L in 2024 changes much.)
