“Never” is a long time. No reason to believe Iowa won’t have some big competitive years in the next 25+ years, and it could happen relatively soon if last year was a harbinger or indicative of a trend.
Odds are against any current Iowa HS kids surpassing Heidesch’s resume, but there’s certainly some promising young talent. Zuber, Merrick, Dunham, Flori, the Gilbert freshmen…lots of kids with a chance to smash 9 minutes.
I’m not sure if Noe is the Iowa HS GOAT. She’s tier 1 for sure, but Katie Flood ran 4:28/9:27 + won some 800 titles, won three 4A XC titles and set a state meet record, and won NXN (admittedly when it was less competitive). She and a couple of others still belong in the discussion.
Odds are against any current Iowa kid’s surpassing Heidesch resume? Really? This won’t age well either
They are. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but odds are that none of these kids will beat:
5th at NXN
8:42y indoors
NBIN mile champ/ 2 mile runner-up
3:59.08 mile
Brooks PR mile win
Nothing against the current guys, they’re awesome, but odds are none of them will surpass the above resume. Even if one or more do, that statement will not have aged poorly, they just would have beaten the odds—which happens.
Predictions of future events can neither be respectful or disrespectful. Respect pertains to current and past accomplishments.
I don’t think that’s true at all. If I predict someone will never get a girlfriend and fail in all their endeavors, that’s disrespectful, isn’t it? Unless you subscribe to some strangely narrow and philosophical definition of respect.
There will never be another year like last year. We had 8 guys sub 4:15 and 9 girls sub 4:38. Heidesch and Noe are the best all time.

Heidesch is Iowas all time best but his resume isn’t truly that spectacular, one xc state title? Zuber has a chance for a second. Also no 1600 state record, plenty that can get that. And if I had a nickel for every time I was at a race clear back in middle school and heard well Merrick is fast now but he’s about done, I could retire. I had coaches say Merrick would only run a 15:3x this season and now he has 3rd all time best time. It’s simple math to see his progression year to year and realize it’s not over, I will expect quicker then 8:55 and 4:08 this year from him with another nice jump junior year. I say Zuber should be 4:05 or so this year and possibly state record for 1600. Dunham will go 4:08-4:10 this season and another that has possibility to go sub 4 before leaving high school. 3 kids that are all capable of being the new king of Iowa. Let’s see how this ages! Zuber and Merrick I’m sure want to beat each other so the drive is there for both of them. Hopefully both stay healthy cause it should be a good show at Drake and State
Merrick improved a lot from his freshman XC season to NXN this year. He might top out at 4:08/8:55, but it’s a silly and disrespectful assumption for a kid who ran 4:14 and 9:12 as a freshman. 4:08/8:55 sounds about right for his sophomore season. I’m hoping for the best for him beyond that.

Heidesch won two XC state titles. And who really cares about the 1600m state record when you split a 3:57 1600 in your 3:59 mile.
All state titles are not all the same. Imagine had Washburn competed other years. There were years when 4:20/9:20 was winning. Heidesch's times and national achievements are incredible. Saying he didn't get the 1600 record is irrelevant. He ran much faster in the mile than anyone else has run in the 1600. The special Drake mile changed things.
Top boys and girls ran the mile at Drake. It was silly to not allow the mile participants to also compete in the 1500 or 1600. They were allowed to do 4 total events.

Yup and big question I have will they do the special mile every year now.
He broke 4. Iowa kids have the same opportunities at the other places that Heidesch ran. No other Iowa kid will break 4. Nobody else has come close.
There will be Iowa kid or kids sub 4 and under his time. Just don’t rip up all you Heidesch posters in your room when it happens. sad because of the school being close to Drake they made a special Mile race just for him, I can say same thing he had other races to do it at why favor one runner.
It isn't sad that he broke the record at Drake. That's cool. It was good for the sport. Both the girls and boys races were great. You are unhappy because your runners weren't fast enough to qualify.
