letsbreal folks, only shot Young has as an Oly prospect is in the marathon. and his body is perfect for it.
Tuohy on the other hand is in no-man's land; not enough speed for 10k or shorter and doesn't have the right build/stride for the marathon.
thus this is an easy one: Young.
Young has 3:37 speed and improving which means he’s just as competitive in the 5/10K as he could be in the marathon. It’s probably easier to make the U.S. marathon team than the 10, but internationally, the competition is fierce.
Young has 3:37 speed, great. Jakob has 3:28 speed and is an endurance monster, how can Young ever realistically hope to win the Olympics against serious international competition? Jakob would beat him in anything from 800m on up, maybe even in the sprints...not to mention all the Africans/Europeans/Australians. I think Hocker at least has an outside chance due to his great speed/kick, Young is putting up great performances but nothing that suggests he’ll be a world-beater.
Young’s 5000m PR is currently 36 seconds off of the mens WR while Touhy is 68 off of the womens. Young is the better Olympic prospect.
Nico's form looked different yesterday, with a more efficient compact style and knee lift. I'm not sure how to describe it exactly but he looked more efficient and faster than previously. He looked prepared to run any type of a race, fast or slow, though I do prefer to see faster ones.

I didn’t say he would necessarily win medals on the track. My point is that he will be equally competitive in the 5/10 compared to the marathon. If I was Smith, I wouldn’t even have Young run a 10000m during college unless they believe that distance will be less competitive at the trials. As I commented before, internationally the marathon is every bit as competitive as being on the track.

Tuohy’s 4:06 is better than Young’s 3:37 imo. No reason to think she doesn’t have speed for the 10k. She has one of the fastest NCAA 1500s ever.
Using the proportions of the WRs, Young’s 3:37 is equivalent to about a 4:02 for a woman.
When it come to speed vs strength, Young and Touhy’s talents are very similar, but on LR, Touhy has a big kick on the track, while Young needs to move up to the marathon.
Hats off to Tuohy. She just 3 peated and did it in amazing fashion. Had two women run her down and pull just about even with 200 meters to go but she found a way to hold them off.
But logic says Young has to be considered the bigger prospect.
1) Young nearly 15 seconds better than the next best US HSer right now.
2) Tuohy had 2 other girls right behind her within 1 second.
3) Tuohy isn't as a good as she was last year according to the Tully speed ratings. Her best mark this year would have been her #6 from last year.
When you combine those facts with all of the other struggles that HS girls phenoms have had over the years, I think Young is clearly the bigger prospect.

Bumping this absolutely ridiculous board, not made by a troll but by the Letsrun creator himself to remind everyone that this site is horrible to young women and girls in a LOT of different ways. This was posted right after NXN 2019, where Tuohy had a bad race and yet here are the grown men already salivating over her downfall. Like--you couldn't wait a bit before posting this garbage thread which was sure to bring out the worst in people?
Keep in mind, it's not always trolls who post insulting things about young girls. It's middle aged men who feel entitled to comment on things they actually know nothing about. Katelyn has commented about the pressure she faced. You, Rojo is where the pressure is coming from.
The pressure is not coming from rojo lol. If she wins 2 xc titles straight of course there's pressure to finish on top. You and a few other posters act as if no one can appreciate highschool girl running unless they are themselves a highschool girl lol.
I'm sorry but Rojo started this thread the day she won NXN for the third consecutive time, not able to resist talking about female high school phenoms and the alleged cruel fate. Talk about having a bug up your a*s. Dismiss it all you want, but this sport is a small community and this is the village gossip site. The kids will read it. Human nature.

But he wasn't appreciating girls high school running at all?
She had a "bad" race that day and still won. Rojo gleefully took to his own message boards to suggest she didn't have a future compared to her male counterpart on the day.
You might not notice this trend but it's out there. High School female phenoms are discussed generally in ways that bring them down while male phenoms are lifted up. People are waiting for girls to burn out, while fawning over boys even as they too stumble or fail.
Don't believe me? Read a few threads on:
Mary Cain (2012-2016)
Sarah Baxter
Alexa Efraimson
Then read a few on
Hobbs Kessler
The Newbury Park Boys
German Fernandez (2009-2011)
Lukas Verzbicas (2010-2012)
Another anecdote, Dyestat actually ranked Katelyn as "tied' that year with Zofia Dudek. Tied. Katelyn was undefeated and Dudek was not. But even Dyestat couldn't help themselves but to rush in and knock Katelyn off her pedestal.
I'm telling you, it might be unconscious but this attitude exists towards high school girls.

Umm, no. That’s cherry picking your examples. Read any thread about Drew Hunter, Wheating, etc. Second, all those female examples you cite did not pan out. So it’s not necessarily wrong lol.

lol. She did look kind of rough that day and with the history of all female phenoms it isn't like unrelated to think of future success. I think Dudek should've been #1 that year simply due to running faster on a more historic course. Speaking of girl talents though the track record isn't too promising. I guess I don't view it as disrespectful. I follow the sport of basketball very closely and so many of those guys become famous at young ages and end up having years worth of videos talking about their decline.
For running generally Male phenoms have some sort of success at the next level but not always. Look at over half of the last 8 sub 4 boys. the curse isn't even only refined to girls. Look how drew hunter has been spoken about on these last few years even without the tinman drama.

Nico got an unbelievable amount of criticism on these boards as well. One of his workouts got posted on YouTube and a 10 page thread on LR pops up on how he’s going to burn out in college. The next time another one of his workouts got posted, guess what, they say the same thing. Lol @ everyone who thinks that just because you train hard in HS you’ll burn out in college, I wonder what the guys predicting his lifetime PR would be 13:50 are thinking now. LetsRun cannot recognize generational talents when they’re staring them in the face.

No one can predict generational talents. We can only reminisce about them when their career has played out.

At this stage it’s a toss up. Obviously depends on their individual improvement over the next few years. I believe Nicos best event will be the marathon, that being said I believe the same for Grant Fisher. They both will be on the US marathon team at the 2028 Olympics. Tuohy she may be very good in the 10000m. Jury still out…

Fisher is the 7th all time 10000 list at 26:33 while Touhy has yet to break 15:00 but Fisher is doomed to run the marathon in 2028 and the jury’s still out on Touhy?
