I find the comments quite interesting. I really like Starliper and think she is peaking at the right time. I also think Thorvaldson is something else, and will be absolutely dominant next year.
But there is so much talk about Tuohy slowing down or flatlining. Personally I don't know how anyone can judge that. XC races are about winning (not times), which Tuohy has done as well or better than any HS runner ever. She did a streak where she was obviously trying to break course records, but obviously that hasn't been on her mind for some time (which speaks well for both herself and for her coaching). She has been winning by ridiculous margins and there has been no need to push hard. Whereas virtually every other runners top times have come when they were in a race until the very end. I don't believe Tuohy gets anywhere near enough credit for what she has accomplished in XC and Track, and just how dominant she has been over every other girl in the nation.
There are comments above that Tuohy's 5000m 15;37 time is irrelevant because it was from 2 years ago. Again, I find this silly. Even if she hasn't run a 15:37 for a while, she certainly has the capacity to run a sub-16min 5 km distance...how many other girls have been close to that (I honestly don't know the answer to this - has any other current runner come close to 16min?). But these numbers means Tuohy has the proven capacity to do it. I know XC is different than track, but we are talking about runners trying to go out and hold with Tuohy at her pace...and no one has shown that ability. So unless they are much better than her on the hills....
Please don't get me wrong, I want NXN to be a competitive race and would love to see 2 or 3 girls push Tuohy until the end. My belief is Thorvaldson will stay closer to her early, but I don't expect Starliper to do so. I agree with earlier comments that she will stay with the top pack for the first 2 to 3km, and then make a move if she is feeling it. Starliper then catches Thorvaldson near the end. Walters will not be far behind.
I expect that Starliper and Thorvaldson give Tuohy at least as good of a run as Chmiel did (which is a huge compliment), if not even a bit better. But I also expect that Tuohy is planning on going hard for her last HS race...and that does not bode well for anyone else unless she burns out. And with her experience....really not likely.
Be great to see the race and all the comments/drama after...I'm sure there will be a few surprises !!!
