Lol. Getting crushed by Canaday:
Gray is a 4 time winner!

Joking? Gray entered the Mt Washington race at least 10 times. Did not beat anyone of higher profile other than maybe once. All others that he beat were local amateurs.
Eric Blake won Mt Washington 4 times too! ...and he beat Gray 4 times!!
You guys need to study the results!

In defense of Gray the guy has kicked my butt at Mt. WA like 3-4 times (although I did beat him that one time in 2012!). Our PRs are also very close....both 58-min low and over a minute faster than Matt Carpenter ever ran. Joe is also a great xc runner...I believe he made a USA world team in that as well.
Mt. WA (while being a road race) is a classic mountain race in the US and the record by Jono Wyatt is legendary (remember Jono had the record at Sierre-Zinal until Kilian smashed it this year).
Also remember Jim actually finished way ahead of Puppi earlier this year at Sierre-Zinal. I'm actually surprised Puppi was that close to Jim at this Worlds event (Puppi also raced Pikes Peak this year and some of the other Golden Trail Series....again so did 3rd placer Oriol Cardona).
Finally note that Joe Gray is a 2-time World Mountain Champ (WMRA on "uphill" and "up /down" years). That alone puts him in rare company. I forget how many USATF titles he's won (like 15 maybe). Show the guy some respect as he's run sub 28:20 for 10km on the track and like 1:02-1:03 in the half marathon!
I bring up the doping issue because we know the sport isn't clean at the top end. I've personally benefited financially quite a bit from the sport over the last 6-7 years and the only time I was legit PED tested (under WADA code) was actually when I won the WMRA World Mountain Champs in 2014 at the Pikes Peak Ascent. Even then I knew it wasn't a surprise test. I mean we've got cases like Mamu and Desco (EPO) and Gonzalo (EPO). There is hardly any testing in mountain running and it is a joke compared to actual USATF/road running events.
Guessing you are new to the sport of mountain running? Gray has raced both Douglas and Puppi numerous times this year and neither were close to him so again how are either of them better? Gray has actually won way more races than both as well. Not sure it matters if someone loses a few times in the past to an athlete if they've literally dominated that athlete as in case of Canaday v Gray. They've raced at least 3 times in the past 2 years and Gray crushed him in uphill race mt Washington a few times and also xterra world championship. Keep in mind Gray is only athlete to win that event with 4 consecutive sub 60 times and has the most sub 59min times. Maybe you don't like him but you cant take away the fact that he has been one of the best at the world level and definite best in the US.
Rebull Berglauf:
Gray 1st
Puppi 3rd, nearly 2 mins back
Douglas nearly 7 mins back
World cup event Italy:
Gray was ahead of both Puppi and Douglas by 4 mins.
Why are we talking about a road race?
Don't understand this posting. We get you have a bro love for Gray but seriously, why are you just cherry picking results to fit your agenda? Don't know about Douglas but it seems Puppi is a very different type of runner. More all-around while Gray just does the shorter, smooth-surface races. Gray also doesn't go where the top competition is. Just look at this years Pikes Peak, where Gray refuses to go head to head with Jornet, Canaday, Lauenstein, Bonnet, Puppi, Wacker, etc in the Pikes Peak marathon and instead does the Pikes Hillclimb vs Demoor? Burrell? Nay?? What?? No international runners whatsoever!! Wait, what is Gray the best in again?
I wouldn't call the Dolomitenmann race a smooth trail, it's quite steep and also some years like this year when he won it was also quite muddy. Also Gray just won the world championship on a pretty rugged course. I've also run the Dreizinnenlauf which Gray set 2nd best all time, that course is also pretty rugged. Not sure what course in Pikes is like or what your national championship course looks like but this guy is class level!
Congrats to Jim.
He beat obstacle course specialist J. Albon (4th) by 10 minutes.
Does this place Jim closer to being the GOAT mountain runner form the US?

Albon won the IAU Trail World Championships this year. The Trail World Championships was slightly longer (44K) than the race Walmsley just won. Some of the same athletes raced - Puppi was 4th in that one.

No, that would be Gray, who won the classic distance race this weekend at the World Championships.

Ah I see. Which mountain running records does Gray have?

Don't know about records, but he's won a ton of national titles and two world titles. Impressive list on his wiki page (which hasn't been updated with the latest world title yet):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Gray_(athlete)National titles in what? GTFO. The guy is a ridiculous nobody scumbag.
This clown show doesn't belong in the top 20 of all time US guys. Least respected out of all the runners.
Wake me up when he runs a real race.
There are rumors about Gray and his sudden improvement late in his career. Very Farah-esque. It remains to be seen how effective doping control is in mountain running.

Wondering bout was asking about mountain running, so that's what the national titles referred to mainly.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
