Bernie is asked early in this video (about 2:35 mark) about being "in the 1%" because he made a million dollars in past years, and he is asked "will you pay your fair share and how do you plan on applying your policy to top earners?"
Bernie avoids directly answering the question and starts to harp on billionaires and amazon, etc.
For the life of me I don't understand why he didn't just say "Yes, as a wealthy person I think I should pay a higher tax rate, along with other people much more wealthy than me, so that we can provide for universal health care...etc. etc. for those who are less fortunate than us."
It seems to me that if you are trying to push for a bigger socialist level safety net, why you wouldn't just say you are willing to pay for it. Wouldn't this make him look good by making it seem like he wants to lead by example?
Instead he just continues to avoid answering the follow up question directly. See his response to follow up questions on this topic at 5:20, 6:40, and 7:50.
It's like pulling teeth to get a straight answer. I know all politicians are in the habit of answering the question they wish they were asked instead of answering the question they were actually asked. But in this case, couldn't he just answer the question as asked, and still look good and promote his policy view?
"Crazy Bernie" is a fitting epithet.
