I hope he does it.
I have a feeling he isn't going to pace himself and he's going to get caught up in the race and not focus on qualifying pace and he'll blow himself up.
He's not used to running in 30th place.

Hahahah! What are you AJW or over 50 years old? Walms did nothing of the sort. The ultra community has been much like the Trump Boy culture. A bunch of old and slow white men preserving what they feel makes them special. It's why they have frowned on prize money, open entry systems, elite entry and comps, and advertising elites. They have done nothing for the young generation wanting to get into this discipline and Jim has taken it to their faces.

What. Utter. Bullshit.
Nice try, Jim.

I don't think anybody frowned on more prize money, open entry systems, elite entry and comps.
And by the way Jim is not young anymore. He is 28.
Mizuno Fan Boy shows his age... no one wears Mizuno anymore. They are about to cancel their entire run line. Down to 2% market share. Didn't even show face at TRE. What are you, 48? Need some Wave technology?
Walmsley has taken it to the old guard and I love it. I'll keep supporting him.

The old guard? Sage? Zach? Tim? Rob? Kilian? That your old guard?
Mizuno fanboy beause my favourite shoe was the Mizuno Wave Sayonara. Sadly, long gone. Lately I'm running in Freedom ISOs. Bostons are good too. I'm thinking on getting a pair of Epic Reacts or maybe Vomero 14s for recovery days. What shoes do you wear?
As for Walmsley -- big fish, small pond. What's to support?

I'm 53 and a big Walmsley fan. He DID bring speed to ultras. He has been the absolute best US ultra runner for 3 years now.
Can he run a sub 1:04? He has a good chance. Equivalent is a 28:42 10k. He has shown in high school and college that he is very good at traditional distance races. With the base he has built over the last couple years, he should be able to run faster than he did in colllege.
Tim is better at 100 mountain races though..... wrote:

I think he has a better chance than that. 1:04 is not that stout. IAAF table equivalents are 29:13/2:17:32. I just don't think 4:50s pace shouldn't be that hard for a runner of his level and age, even if he has hasn't touched that pace frequently in years.

he was faltering and falling off CR pace. but don't just believe my word, here are the splits:
Mile......Jim......Tim
80........11:23......11:49
85.........12:15.......12:35
90.........12:57........13:14
so you can see that Tim made up 6 minutes from 79.8 to 85.2 and then he made up another 3 minutes from 85.2 to 89.9.
Your math is really, really, really bad.

You're the one who's being disrespectful.
Walmsley has always been respectful to everyone.

He is not just trying to get an OTQ — I don’t think anyone who is not a troll thinks Walmsley can’t run a sub 2:19.
Running a sub 64 half doesn't mean zilch towards running a 2:11 marathon.
If he wants to run a 2:11 in the trials, then he'd be much better off to qualify with a sub 2:19 marathon.

I agree with you. Jim comes off quite respectful in that article. I don't know where the criticism comes from.

They hate him 'cause they ain't him. Bottom line.

Yeah, hilarious. That guy thinks that article is proof of a great disrespect for other runners?? My God, what nonsense.
To answer some other people's question of "why so much hate for Jim? ", I'll take a stab-
1) Of course every successful runner/athlete/person gets hate. Simple/main reason: jealousy. It's human nature.
2) in this specific case, I know guys like YMMV are BOTH jealous AND mad that Jim is so dominant at ultras because: Jim.....doesn't....EAT ....MEAT!?! . He's convinced this is impossible. So, it makes him angry and irrational. He thinks that the only healthy successful diet is High Meat/High Fat, low carb, despite mounds of evidence and testimonials to the contrary. While a few athletes/ultra runners have indeed done well on this diet (Z. Bitter), it has hardly proven to be a superior diet, with a lot, lot, LOT more top athletes doing as well or much better with traditional high carb diets, and in some cases not eating any meat at all (or even going full vegan like Jurek).
Now you know!

What are you talking about? Assuming the splits listed are correct, there is a 26 minute gap at mile 80, a 20 minute gap at mile 85, and a 17 minute gap at mile 90. Math checks out. It appears like you just failed to understand the post.
Damn, your math sucks.
Guys, his math REALLY sucks when you account for the fact that it was absolutely impossible for Tim to make up time on Jim given that Tim ran his times in 2012 and Jim ran those times in 2016.

This part is confusing to me. If he wants to find out if he can be a serious contender, why doesn't he (a) train and race with that as his focus and (b) actually race a marathon instead of a half? I don't have any strong feelings about the guy one way or another, but the decisions he makes are puzzling at best.
