I take it back. It's been established that 27:24 is mediocre.
Letsrun is a weird place.

German "Hobby Jogger" Fernandez
Can't believe you guys are excited by any time over 27 minutes. What are we now. Canada?

Didn't realize German is only 24. He just has to get the right physio working on him, eat properly, train properly, then he can leave the past behind and have a great future.
Your right, I'm sure Nike isn't supplying that at all.

Most people who have run 28:06 can't come close to 3:34. The 5000m has to be Fernandez's event. If he can't make it there, it's not going to happen at 10000m.
Doesn't work like this, sorry. Rupp only managed 1258 for 5k with 350 and 2644 to his name. Every event is different and had its own physiology. Performances above and below said event don't guarantee sucess.

Tell that to ventolin and he will call you "moron" and "imbecile".
The 3:34 says he is back more than the 28:06. Now he just has to establish himself as a 10k runner.
IAAF Tables rate it at a sub-2:12:30 Marathon performance.

But it guarantees capability.
Has anyone considered that this simply wasn't that fast of a race? It was out in 14:10. If German had run 27:59 (which he's surely capable of right now) everyone would be freaking out. Seems like he's in shape to hang at 27:50 pace just doesn't have the wheels at the end right now. Also seems like this was very much run off base/strength work. What do you think his 1500 is right now? I would bet it's not much better than 3:40. Wait until it's down to ~3:35 again. Kid is on track for a sub 13:00 he should definitely be running the 5k. He's a distance oriented guy who ran 3:34 on way less than ideal training..

How is 28+ on track for sub 13? Also he's not a kid. He's like 25.

LOL, no it doesn't. That was the point of the post. Give me the number of 5Ks Rupp has been in a 5K race where the winner was 12:55 or better (a time Rupp should capable of based on his other PRs...). Now give me the time he has ran that fast...oh that's right, zero time. What is he, 0 for 5? 0 for 10? Im not sure.
Regardless, if he fails to run low 12:50s 1, 2, maybe 3 times, you can say he just didn't get in the right race or have his legs that day.
If he does this multiple times, he is not capable. Not his event. Ball (or clock in this case) don't lie.
Whatever the 5K equivalent for 3:34 and 28:06 is, I doubt German can run it right now. Come at me Ventolin.

The amount of times someone attempts something has to do with success not capability. It's like you are confusing correlation with causation.
Is he running the boston marathon???
Jäger was in a similar situation back in 2011/2012 coming off of a bad foot injury. Ppl thought he was done. Now with German it's been lil Minor Injuries stunting his ability to train consistently
I'm positive Jerry can get him back on the right track (no pun intended)
at 24 yrs old he has a few yrs to get very consistent and run fast he has a lot of time. Jäger is 27 now and is running very well. Wish German the best
I'd feel more confident about Fernandez's chance if he had been mixing it up on the indoor circuit with Hill, Lomong, Bayer, Jager over 3000m and hitting 7:40-ish. 28:06 for me is solid, but not indicative of making the team at any event right now.

Might have been a good point if he'd won the race

Yes, because if he is coming back from Achilles injuries, indoor tracks are perfect.
Indoor tracks have not proven to cause a higher rate of Achilles issues. Where did you come up with that?

But Jager race is 1/3 the distance, and requires athleticism beyond running.
I like German but I don't think he can put in the consistent high miles to be a good 10k runner. Id Move him to the steeple and cross my fingers.
There is no correlation between running the steeplechase and higher injury rates. He is smooth and naturally quick, more suited for 3k, everyone knows he's not a 10k guy... Send him over the barriers with jager.
A guy of his talent should not settle for mediocre 10ks.
If you have an Achilles problem, go right ahead and run fast on an indoor track. He should try Vibram Five Fingers shoes as well, to strengthen his feet.
