I am sure he was, as with many of the African runners of that era. There was no rule against it, and by all means legal. So what is the problem. Do you really think that the Africans are the blame for coming to America to compete because our American coaches are in many cases to lazy to recruit and develop our own kids.
I have been a firm poster on here that often Coaching don't take place when you bring them in. Take Central Arizona CC for example...they have at least one African a year come in with outstanding stats, however, their stats of what they have run, and what they run in the races for Central are VERY RARE, as fast as their PR stats....and more so, never run those times at NJCAA National championship races....therefore, you really don't have to coach them, just let them run and they will beat the majority...enough on that...
I like the new age rule with the NCAA....it does put limits on the Africans and others brought to the U.S.
