Would assume Oregon would get Maton since he is native. Looks like they did not even make final cut for some of the other top guys they were recruiting.
I know that Tanner Anderson is/was very interested in Oregon, but they never got back to him.
Huge loss on their part.

Very interesting stuff here and is always fun to see where people go!
Have heard Levi Thomet hinting towards Oregon on certain posts on social media. I've gotten to know Levi over the past couple years and from what he has told me, he will commit on the spot once Oregon offers.
Oregon "make an offer" to a guy that hasn't broken 1:57/4:10/9:00 who was only the 11th junior at footlocker last year? Am I missing something here? I realize he's an "Alaskan guy with no competition and a ton of upside" but he's had his opportunities on the national stage (Arcadia as well) as a junior. I'm sure they'll stay in touch and welcome him as a walk on (maybe books to get his name on paper) but you kids reading this need a healthy does of reality. This is not your world. Thomet's track PR's are nothing unique and that's what Power 5 schools "make offers" based on. I know - my sole job is to recruit for a Power 5 conference school.
Here is what Oregon is doing: They are only going to "offer" real money to guys they feel confident will score at the Pac-12/National meet their first year. Guys who've already proven they can do so. Hence Ches & Jenkins. They know their reputation is strong enough that they're going to get sub 1:52/4:10/9 guys as JUNIORS to walk on. They don't care who...but enough will do so that they'll still be able to field a consistently nationally competitive XC program. Every year.
Robert Johnson is no fool. He knows how to spend his money wisely and dime-a-dozen distance guys a nationally competitive TRACK (what truly matters to most P5's) program does not make. They're spending their $$$ on track and field guys they KNOW will produce points as freshmen (and those that don't will find themselves without $$$ by their sophomore year - trust me). This is why you kids haven't heard of any distance athletes signing with Oregon yet...and are all butt hurt that your "buddy who qualified for footlocker" hasn't received a call back.
Oregon knows it's going to get one of the top 3 TRACK distance kids in the country (which isn't Thomet OR Tanner Anderson) for relatively cheap and they'll always get another proven transfer or international who's drawn to the reputation. That's a hell of a top 5 with Ches, Jenkins, Haney, "Prep A" & "Xfer/International B"/"developing athlete C" this year and someone to inevitably replace Jenkins next year. Will it be enough to win XC ever - especially accounting for the occasional injury? Maybe not...but they'll leave that to the Oklahoma State's/Colorado's/Wisconsin's/Stanfords to pillage their track & field team's $$$ while Oregon turns around and beats the pants off those schools on the track and is butting heads with the Big Boys of the SEC to win the more prestigious national track titles.
Just how it works. If your buddies want big offers/lots of booty smootching go to mid majors. Now...the women work totally different. But that's an explanation for another time and I've already taken too much out of my day.
Just for fun:

Add current top 12 xc prospect Zach Dale to illinois along with reiser. Best 1-2 recruiting pair in the nation?
They've kept most of the best in-state talent over the last 3 years. If they don't do something with it in the next 2 years it will have been a huge waste of talent.

Really???? What about Perrier and the big 10 champ Schrobilgen?
This all makes sense and explains why they only go after 4 or 5 guys. I will still say they did not do well this year if they only get one of those guys.
This is really helpful. I also want to hear your thoughts on women and recruiting. But for now, I'm curious as to who you think the top 3 track distance boys are? Ones who might be good/lucky enough to get an offer, whether they are seniors or not this year.
Per his twitter, John Dressel to Colorado.
And it is Maton, officially committed to Oregon. Oregon doesn't have much left to offer since they have likely used most of their 13 scholarships in filling out their National Championship caliber track and field team. I think Oregon has a plan of bringing in one top kid each year for XC, and filling the team with mid distance track people. Most other XC programs use a large portion of their scholarships for XC, at the expense of a decent track & field team.

Oregon picks a small number of elite distance runners to recruit and assumes they will get enough of them to have a competitive team. This year it looks like they got one of that group to commit.
Excellent reality check.It's a business kids/parents.
How about Jake and Luke Hoffert heading to Bradley University. 4:11/9:10/14:27 (3 mile) kids. Big pick up for a mid-major like Bradley.

Sounds like they are not paying for college - why else would anyone go there?
SUU picking up two 9:12 Utah guys, one with a 4:09 1600 to boot. Josh Collins & Dakota Lange. Looks like they're going to be continuing their qualifying for nationals...
So you guys don't think Oregon would make an offer to Anderson? He seems like a worthwhile investment to me. Even from the track standpoint, he's a very strong 5K runner. He's the NXN favorite by far and he'd be top 5 at FL, you don't think Oregon would bite at that? A lot more potential than a lot of Oregon's current frosh/redshirt frosh crop.
To add to the question about great west coast academic and running schools, Washington is a really good choice. They're one of the highest ranked public schools now, and they've got a consistent coach. Plus he can develop distane studs like Aaron Nelson.
While I do love my huskies, I cringe every time I hear that a top talent commits to UW. They have so many injuries they have on their team, it has to be something with the coaching.
