If I chew gum while I run I swallow air and get gas and a stomach ache if I drink liquids. Maybe it is just me but chewing gum and long runs are not a good mix for me.
kind of weird. I'd imagine that a caffeinated gum would mostly be useful for marathoners (in theory) since they are probably the only ones who would use something like this during a race.
I don't think Nick uses it during his runs. At least on the website they recommend not doing that (probably to cover their asses).
Back when I watched NBA basketball Gary Payton used to chew gum during games all the time.
Stick your gum when the sun don't shine.
Hmmm. Would you expect more effective absorption if you did that?

You got the "or something" part right. It would take about 600mgs in a 75kg person. A 16oz cup of coffee from Starbucks typically has 300-400mgs of caffeine. Know anybody who has ever had two medium "cups" of coffee in the space of an hour?
Starbucks drip coffee is abnormally caffeinated. Most coffee contains about 80mg/8oz. The problem is that every cafe is different. I have had that much coffee from Starbucks before, and it was a serious problem. Can't imagine running after taking in that much caffeine. I was shaking and having muscle spasms. 600mg is a crap ton of caffeine to take in quickly.

i guess his biochemistry background didn't alert him to the research indicating that 3-6mg/kg body weight is required for a performance boost.
I hope he has a lot of money. Not the slam dunk he thinks.
All the money saved gets pissed away on a "great" idea , and our buddy Nick ends up selling used cars in Springfield , giving away the unsold autobiographies as a gift with purchase and of course for just shopping the car lot you get a free Run Gum to chew on , while Nick chews your ear with his past accolades.
In your opinion

The highest 16oz drip - which is a GRANDE not close to a medium size drink - from Sbucks is 330mg, outside that selection most caf-beverages from them are much lower:

do you realize how much this stinks of jealousy? I'm pretty indifferent about Symmonds, maybe leaning towards the side of he sees himself as a bit more than a typical level headed person does, but let's not go overboard.
Know idea on the start up costs but it probably doesn't cost that much to make once up and running. I will give it a shot before a workout just to see how it works, but I agree with the folks who can get a messed up stomach if you are chewing for a long time on an empty stomach. I'd probably chew for 15 minutes and spit it out.
I do agree that the name deserved more thought and perhaps outside input. For example, I could see this being marketed well to rock climbers who are doing long climbs or multiple climbs and need a boost at some point, or for backpackers or long mountain bike rides when you are starting to bonk a bit. I almost think it has more marketability as a "second wind" supplement than the pre-race or pre-workout intent that it was originally designed for.
wow
My coach and other athletes used to tell me that soda was bad for an athlete's health. I insisted on drinking it every day. Even race days. I always felt it gave me an advantage. I always felt fresh for workouts (even double sessions) and races. Caffeine is a performance enhancing drug. Nick Symmonds you should be ashamed

I was surprised to hear about elite runners taking caffeine just the other day in the Letsrun article on the Hansons guys (Jake Riley and Bobby Curtis) in Chicago. It said "We asked both guys what they do for nutrition and Jake said he’s going to use Gu Brew and a caffeine pill around half-way."
The Run Gum website says he takes one before and one after a race/workout. I can see the benefit of taking one before; I also get that weak and groggy feeling before a race. However, once the race starts the adrenaline boost is all I need.
In my day there were DIII guys doing caffeine and even pseudophedrine before races.
In my day, we did beer after races.

I'll just stick to EPO, HGH, Roids,Thyroid meds, insulin and a few others, jk. But seriously what would happen if I injected myself with my EpiPen with a mile to go in a race? It is adrenaline.
You could exceed maxHR and die, depending on the distance and effort.

Lol!
or
Nick Symmonds Fried Trout and Salmon Fish n Chips.
Nike has got to be laughing their ass off on this one.
It's amazing that anyone who has posted in the past that Symmond was a little too full of himself, getting that hack to refer to him as "the Brad Pitt of track and field."
Come on, man!
Really?
I guess this is what happens when the sport falls this far...

How about pills, which you can get at your grocery store? They'll give you a buzz in 20 minutes with a precise dose. If that's not quick enough, you've got a doper mentality.
