The steroids you take for asthma are not the kind of steroid that helps with athletic performance. And inhaled steroids (which affect the lungs with very little systemic effect) rather than oral steroids are typically prescribed for asthma.
And if you talk to those who need the inhalers, they will tell you it is not a pleasant experience. I doubt many, or any, you see puffing before a track event are doing it for anything other than medical reasons.
Yes. My son had asthma in high school, mainly seasonal. And used an inhaler with albuterol at times. Not only did it not improve his performance, he absolutely HATED how it made him feel. It does crazy things to your heart rate. I don't think many of those runners using an inhaler are doing it so they can run faster. As the last person to reply said, it is not pleasant.
HS football, basketball and baseball players have used, do you think any runners have used? Use to get into a better school such as Ivy, etc. seems some kids run exceptional times and than fade back to mediocrity once in college
I know that some kids can take huge time off pr's from one race to the next and that transition to college can change ones priorities
Thoughts?
This thread from 2014 just showing up now is hilarious
The answer to the question posed by the thread is obvious. Do high school athletes have access to drugs? If they do, some will undoubtedly dope. Like their role models - the pros.

You can go to bodybuilding forums and find a ton of sources for 'common' drugs (think testosterone, steroids, etc; even HGH) within 15 minutes of googling. You can go further and find sources for legitimate EPO with not much more research. Yes, you can't pay with a credit card, but it's not difficult to get bitcoin at all - hell, you can buy bitcoin on Venmo and send it to any wallet
I hope HS'ers aren't doping but I feel like it's not the case lately. it seems like there are 4-5 people crowned as talented as Rupp who was incredibly suspicious himself per year lately
We know football players dope, especially those at top programs, and a fair amount of HS sprinters dope too - why should distance runners be clean? I'm against PED usage in all sport, but I have MUCH more sympathy for the poor runningback or wide receiver taking a few steroids to try to get his family out than the talented kid from a wealthy, but not uber wealthy, family doping to get into a top Ivy+ instead of a decent state school. It'd be even worse if the family is in on it
This is an old thread but I spoke with someone about doping, googled it, and this came up first
I don't think it's in large numbers but there is one thing I realized- in my area, a fair amount of wealthy people microdose their children with HGH if they'll likely be "short" (shorter than 6'1"). I wonder if that would have lifelong benefits for racing too, or if other microdosing goes on as well to get people into colleges as an athlete.
None of what you said justifies the improvement. If anything more suspicious
With high school kids, you literally don't know if they were smoking weed and eating pies all day before they improved. It's not like every talented kid is engaged in really systematic training and diet. It's not like every talented kid even has a competent coach.

A million years ago from the 2020's but I knew football players on my high school who took steroids and worked with a guy who claimed to take it while trying to make it as a sprinter in high school.
I also knew junior meatheads who took it in high school team or shortly after and they never did any sports. Back 35 years ago there was no testing in my area for high school athletes.
If I had ability to be a legitimate college athlete I would like to think I could resist that scummy move but I understand why poorer athletes would gamble with their health and take it.
