He certainly dominated the Big Ten in college. The guys he would beat at Big Tens would always come back to beat him at Nationals.

No, winning Big Ten (although I would be very happy to do that) and then getting dominated at NCAA does not translate to world class...
How many Big Ten winners have gone on to beat world records in the last 30 years?
In the mid '80s, 1:41 at 800M was the world record. In 2014, 1:41 normally makes you world champion or Olympic champion (medalist as the very least)
In the mid '80s, 13;00 was the world record. In 2014, you would have no chance of a medal at world champs or Olympics if you were "only" a 13:00 performer...
Makes no sense to me...
What magic has happened in order for second tier runners to run 13:00 (13:02 in this particular case)...
Athletes in the mid '80s were doing altitude training, they were login 150 mile weeks, they were eating healthy, they had sponsors, they had perfectly rabbited races in Europe...
That's why Sebastian Coe was able to run 1:41
Why is the 5000m so easy now (and not the 800m)
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
