For reference I was told Keith Kelly ran 24:01 in 1998 after course was modified in 1992 or so?
He was pretty good.

sorry, bunch of PC guys under 24:00 Martin Fagan ran 23:20 for example
I found the women's results on the BC site--anyone know where the men's results are?
Oregon is obviously strong, but hard to say how good they really are from such a small meet and holding some big guns out. They need more out of Stinson for sure.
The other teams were unimpressive. 'Cuse had a nice pack, but not a particularly good performance at Franklin Park. Who knows, maybe that's what they planned?
USTFCCA - please move Wisco to the bottom of the ranking where they belong. They just don't have the players. If they make it to Terre Haute, it will be by the skin of their teeth.
Maybe Stinson's problem was that a bunch of younger Ducks are passing him by. He got passed by freshmen Cheserek and Leingang and by sophomore Melancon and Juniors Pickering Elkaim and Winn. If he gets in shape maybe he can crack the Oregon top 7. For some reason, I don't think the Oregon coaches are too worried at this point. Quite a show by the Ducks today (5 in the top 9).
The ACC had their conference meet there in 2010 and the leaders ran in the 23:40s I believe (though that was at the end of the season and FSU came second at nationals that year). So I was comparing to that, but they did some renovations to franklin park last year so I don't know if the course is the same.
Course was almost 100% the same. Some turns are sharper. The grass is thicker. Their is more gravel. But same distance and route and such.
Melancon of UO is overlooked because he was born and raised in Eugene. He is one of the more consistent Ducks compared to the other blue chip recruits they get. Nice to see another Oregon HS kid becoming part of Duck XC history.

When Kenyans have a bad day they congratulate the winner and move on to their next race. Stinson is a great Oregon runner and will have better days. If Stinson is top-10 at nationals and is the Duck #1 runner that wouldn't surprise me.
I think we're seeing top-10 nonsense talk all too much this year. Lets not forget that at least half of that group will likely be made up of athletes not American-born, maybe only leaving room for one non-foreign born athlete..
Sure Stinson has a chance to lead the Ducks but top 10 would be hallowed ground this year. I don't see him as the top American
Turns out that Martin Fagan (23:20) was Breaking Bad.
random comment on Franklin Park course. Is it my bad memory, or didn't, back in the days, the Franklin Park course start on the golf course down the hill. I have this memory of cruising out across one of the fairways while some old dudes were lining up their iron shots. Then looping back along a road, scaring random people in the neighborhood, and then up a hill to the present course.
Yes it did used to go over the golf course it changed back in the 80s i believe and has been the same ever since.
I kinda like this team for nationals. Jenkins is a top 10 guy. Stinson top 15 on a good day. Ches and Leingang top 30. Just need another guy who has a good day and is top 20 and they can compete with OK St.
On a 10K course, I think Melancon is their guy. The longer the course, the stronger he gets. I see an Oregon team of Jenkins, Stinson (on a good day), Leingang, Cheserek, Melancon (and maybe Elkaim, if they need him) giving Okie State some fits.
excited already!! wrote:

4:52/mile or 3:01-2/km for an 8K. It doesn't seem particularly impressive for D1 runners unless the course is slow. Without knowing how much was left in the tank, what does a 24:11 tell you?
So a little more insight into the times. We were out there taking rough splits and we saw something like this for the lead group:
1 mile 4:48
2 mile 9:48 (5:00)
3 mile 14:43 (4:55)
4 mile 19:43 (5:00)
5 mile 24:11 (4:28)
These are all rough splits from memory but it was something like that. Cheserek and the other oregon guy were super relaxed through the finish line.
The top Oregon guys were just cruising, enjoying the ride, for the first 4 miles or so and then raced the last mile. So they had plenty in the tank. Guys in the low 24's could probably run faster. Everyone who ran high 24's and above were racing the whole time.
3 miles was called at 14:54 on flotrack, and you can hear a guy yelling 15:06-07 on the video.
i agree that that markers weren't entirely accurate, but 3 miles was certainly not 14:43.
