Fortune (luck) figures prominently both in the education which is possible at different schools, and the career possibilities graduating from certain schools affords. Attending Harvard, Stanford, Pomona College, Grinnell College, MIT, etc., very likely give someone a better chance at a better education than, say, University of New Mexico, North Dakota State, Columbia College (Chicago), etc. But some of the smartest people I know in academe and law went, as undergraduates, to places that were not the highest ranked. Of course, if one goes to grad school, that school is much more likely to matter in the character of the education one receives than undergraduate school. Indeed, finding the right department in which to major--a professor who takes a great interest in students, a professor who although not well known is brilliant and a great teacher, fellow students one connects with and has great conversations, an environment that allows a student to explore himself/herself, etc. No one on this board knows Mary Cain, and no one knows what would fit her--small school or large, liberal arts or more professional, east coast, midwest, or west coast (we can leave the south out of this!), etc. However, my guess is that what will interest her is being closer to Salazar rather than further away; indeed, I'd be surprised if she doesn't attend school on the west coast. If I'm right about this, I think Oregon and Stanford are the two possibilities. Oregon for obvious reasons, and academically, it has an excellent and interesting interdisciplinary Honors College, where Mary would find herself among other really smart kids. Stanford, again because she would be among really smart kids, where there are excellent training facilities, where there continues to be an influx of women middle and long distance recruits.
