1972 Olympic Trials 5000 meters in Eugene. There was a huge media build-up prior to the race. It was the young kid verses the veteran. "Pre" (the kid) and George Young (the veteran) ran like they were connected by a string, lap after lap. Finally the string became a bit longer as the distance widened between the two. Pre won the race. Do you know who was 3rd? Leonard Hilton. The greatest race I've ever seen.
1) The race in Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
2) That Stanford 5000 Lopez Lomong ran in 2012 when he kicked with 2 laps to go thinking he had 1 lap to go- slowed at the finish and then won on the actual last lap.
3) Galen Rupp stopping to fix his shoe in a 5k and catching back up to beat the leaders at NCAA in 2009?.
4) Wheating outleaning Sekretarski at Regionals 800m in 2009? while Sekretarski pointed #1 to his coach in the stands.
I ran the 3200 meters, and it is the last race I would expect to see a false start, since it is such a long race. Scott Fry certainly had the seasoning to know this and could have jogged the first lap and still won the race.
The medal you have should belong to you and not "one Scott Fry". Winning a race involves being able to understand and follow the starter's commands.
As for the fans chanting "you suck", all I can say is that its not hard to understand the reason companies move their manufacturing jobs to Mexico and China, given this behavior and what it exemplifies.

I was living in Minnesota and really rooting for Beardsley. I thought for sure he was going to take the race when he made that last push but Alberto held him off.

High School:
1995 CIF state championship 4x4 final, Obea Moore makes up 35m on the anchor leg to beat a 46s quarter guy to the line.
Of these races, I think the 1995 CIF 4x4 final was probably the best--I'm sad that we never got to see Obea Moore on the pro scene; the kid was phenomenal.

What was with all those freaking motorcycles?! If they weren't actually impeding progress in a few instances, there certainly was potential for that to happen.

There are those that argue that Beardsley might have had a shot at winning if not for the motorcycles coming around Beardsley. He then had to duck around them. He also got clipped by the side mirror of the bus that was taking the press to the finish line. The crowds go so big they had to pass the two leaders on the course.

Dabney was a beast. Little wiry guy who ran like hell. Here is the account of the race that Old Ultra Guy remembers:
Dabney also ran a 1:52.6 anchor indoors in December 1971 at the Bishop Loughlin meet when the Armory was a board track. I thought he would have a better college career. He went out in the heats at the 1976 Olympic Trials.
