Can you top this? In '73 I ran the West Valley Marathon in CA and a few weeks later got a call from Jack Leydig, the race director, asking if I could find a place to stay for him and three other runners who were en route to Bogota and had a Miami layover. I said "sure" and asked who they were. Reply: Frank Shorter who had won gold in Munich a few months earlier, Jon Anderson, who had run the 10,000 there, and Jim Johnson who was the #2 ranked U.S. steeplechaser. Between Leydig's call and their arrival in late April Anderson won Boston. So I hosted the reigning Olympic and Boston champs. And in the A.M. we went for an easy ten miler in the Miami heat. While running Shorter commented to Anderson, "I see you toe in with your left foot like I do." I was tempted to send the story to Runners World. My chance to cripple the first generation of joggers eager to emulate the greats.
