I am a New Yorker. I agree that comments about tripping and killing runners, etc are completely out of line. That said, I was on the fence about running the marathon until today. I went out to Rockaway beach to help clean up. The drive out looked like a war zone. I've travelled through North Africa, Mexico, Russia, and this was as bad as anything I've ever seen. There is mud on the streets, no electricity, no water, garbage and debris everywhere. People are stranded on the peninsula. People have no food, water, blankets or gas and have lost everything they own except the clothes on their backs. The water was 5 feet deep at one point. The line for clothes, food and water soon stretched around the block. There were no cops, national guard or FEMA anywhere in sight. The only people there to help were the busload of volunteers. The fact that the authorities are obviously stretched so thin that there were no cops or aid workers in the middle of this chaos leads to the conclusion that to run a major marathon tomorrow would be absolutely ridiculous. It would be a slap in the face to the people waiting for help to use even one cop or first responder in order to run a race.

not getting my money or time wrote:Why would any runner from outside of NYC want to help with the recovery after many of the city's citizens threatened to spit on, throw rotten food at, trip, boo... you get the picture... marathon runners? This was the real reason the race was cancelled. The city was worried that some crazy, nut-jobs would assault the runners and open up the possibility of major lawsuits, against the race and city, since they should have seen it coming.
If I have any money to donate to suffering people, it's going to Africa, or somewhere where the affected aren't entitled, whiny brats.
I'm currently in NYC for this debacle and this is exactly how my friends and I feel. We were much more likely to help out before the marathon was cancelled. Now we're just going home early. Thanks a lot NYC.
