Makau is fighting back
Makau is fighting back
Leading roup of five at 33K: Chimsa, Worku, Kipchirchir, Makau, Some with Kirwa some seconds behind.
Deressa Chimsa now leading.
~15 minutes left and we're still watching "Lisa"..........
Love the commentators riding on bicycles. Other big marathons need to get green like that.
Guy riding on bike and reporting at the same time... Impressive.
Makau is charging back. He will not go easy.
Makau is now pulling away.
Makau is tough as nails.
Good to see Dieter Baumann commentating, nice teeth.
Slow time for Makau. Craziest finish location ever.
Good to see Makau won, nowhere near the WR though, they were way off pace by 5k even. Dear God that was the worst coverage ever though.
2:06+ was a great marathon time back in 1997. Now it's just a good time. But a win is a win.
testing is working now.
Yeah they could have at least made Makau's dropping back, catching back up, dropping back, then winning seem exciting with better coverage.
Meselech Melkamu probably breaking the course record.
2:21:05.
Second place for Georgina Rono in 2:21:42
EVERYBODY GIVE IT UP FOR LISA!!!!!!!

He has special toothpaste.
I thought the coverage (of the mens race) was excellent, and the commentators were clearly knowledgable. I did not see any pictures of 4:00+ runners, or of running bananas, or any of the usual "general interest" stories - the only part that did not focus on the elite races was the occasional coverage of a fun relay made up of German Olympians from other disciplines, which I didn't find too distracting, and which was probably needed in order to keep non-runners interested.
Two of the commentators on bikes (with Lisa Hahner and with Sören Kah) were Anna Hahner and Jan Fitschen, both elite runners in their own right, so it wasn't a surprise that the two top German runners were covered quite a lot. Jan Fitschen's comments in particular were mostly spot-on.
My criticism would be the lack of coverage of the front-end of the women's race - i don't know if it was a lack of interest or a question of not enough camera crews, but coverage only started in ernest after the first men had finished. Admittedly, the mens race was much more exciting this time, with lots of changes in pace, but still I would have appreciated some updates about the situation in the women's race earlier on.
Still, nice to see a full broadcast of a marathon on TV and online - no commercial breaks either, and all for free.
Does not wanting my kids to watch a bisexual threesome at the Olympics make me a bigot?
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)

Gudaf Tsegay will not race the 10000m? Just to spite the federation?
