I'll reply to this thread. I've never had my IQ tested, but on any test with known percentiles, the lowest I can remember scoring was in the 90th percentile, and I'm usually 95 or higher, which I find a little odd just thinking about since I knew many people in my advanced classes in high school who seemed smarter than me, but I also went to a good high school I guess. I also scored 5s on the AP calc and AP physics tests in high school, the only AP classes I took. I had good teachers though and largely credit them. I am graduating in May with two science degrees and plan on going the Ph.D. route, though I considered becoming an M.D. and even a teacher.
Anyway, a lot of people in the general public seem pretty stupid to me, which I know sounds terrible, but it just seems like very few people are capable of critical thinking, which is probably what I mainly equate with intelligence. People with poor memories also irritate, and it seems like my memory is far better than most. I can get along and enjoy most people though, as long as they're not drama queens, but I've found the only time I really feel intellectually at home is when I'm in a room with a bunch of other science majors or scientists. I have a hard time enjoying myself if I have to be around "normal" people for more than an hour or so at a time. I often times just keep my mouth shut because I frequently hear people say ignorant and just plain wrong things, and I've found most people tend to get angry if you correct them, no matter what pains you take to do it as politely as possible. Because of this, I often feel isolated when I'm in a group of Average Joes. I try to keep the topics limited to every day things like the weather, sports, what people did that day, etc, because those seem to be the only topics everyone can talk about on equal terms.
All that being said, I took a machining class in high school with a bunch of guys I would have normally labeled as knuckle-draggers, and by the end of that class my opinions had drastically changed as most were substantially better than me at machining. Almost everyone is either good at something or has the potential to be good at something. It takes a truly dull, lazy, and apathetic person to be below-average at everything.
