So far, I think Ryan Hall has only proven he is a 2:06:30 athlete. London is a slightly faster course than Chicago, and Boston was "blowing in the wind" (I think this "hand of God" was at least worth 1:30), and Chicago was slightly warm today, so a 2:08:04 time for him is actually not a bad performance. Ryan is showing some unusual consistency for the marathon distance.
If we assume he is only a 2:06:30 athlete, is it realistic to expect him to win an international major, or even appear on the podium? Perhaps the main fault is not with Hall, but with the expectations of his compatriots.
Or, on the other hand, maybe Ryan has yet to find the right coach who can squeeze another couple minutes out of him. Maybe he should look for a worthy mission in Iten. Maybe Brother Colm could help him?
Seems also that a new tactic of marathons includes a sudden acceleration around 25K to 30K, for a few consecutive kilometers, to destroy the pack, versus the previously "optimal" concept of pacing yourself consistently until the end. This tactic should no longer take anyone by surprise.
