Most first round picks in the MLB draft out of high school have about $10 million or so saved up at 21
I think all of this depends on how much money your parents/family is investing in your college education, not how much youre saving.
It's not really impossible. I go to school full time and just turned 21, and have just shy of 20,000. I also work full time and when I'm on vacation from school I pick up a part time job as well as odd jobs.
Some people are just more motivated than others. Spend less time watching Netflix and more time investing in yourself.
At one point I had literally $8 in the bank. Generally hovered between 800-2000 at age 21. Only hanging around 3-5k right now at 25 but I'm eschewing my college degree to be a musician blah blah blah.
I had -$400 saved at 21 (I graduated in 1983 at 21 with $400 in student loans). Actually saved about $3K by the time I went to college but was all gone at the end of the 4 years.
I'm now 45. I never ha more than 15,000 saved. Good thing I didn't. I get way more help on the FAFSA for my kid's college education than if I had saved
Zero.
I was working a little and paying my way for school, but paid no meaningful rent while pursuing my dreams.
If you have some passion for something, by all means pursue it. Don't just buy a house because adults buy houses.
Pursue your passion and try to make a buck or ten at it.
If you don't know what your passion is, then find it by trying stuff.
Save money along the way if possible.
35,000 at 19. Not 21 yet, no idea what it will be.

The op is now 27 and should probably be given advice more suited for an adult than a college age kid. A drifting 27 year old, who's trying to find himself, needs to find some focus in a hurry.
