correct, he had an injury at xc nats as a freshman, he then was wearing a boot before world junior xc. as a sophomore, he had anemia and got injured avoiding someone on a track or stepping on something. as a junior, he was top 10 at xc nats, and won the big 12 mile indoors, but has run $only$ 7:53/4:03, well off his freshman times. Wejo's probably right that they should check his serum ferritin levels again. Maybe he should just abandon the vegetarianism until he retires. Or maybe there are other reasons such as a slow approach to build for worlds or at least outdoors, and maybe he'll get it together then.
I think it is obvious that smith is just not the right guy, i have been saying this from the beggining OSU is a blue collar program and no offense to german he is not that. He needs to be at an Oregon type program where they wipe your ass if you need them to.
What is more blue collar than running 8:34/4:00 then going to work at Appleby's? Lol.
It's pretty hard to blame Smith when his program has won two straight XC nationals and is the big favorite to win a third straight.

Actually it's pretty easy. I just like blaming people. And why not Smith? Seems a convenient enough target.

I don't care about Scott Gillespie, I have followed German for years and want him to do good. Why would I be excited about him getting beat?
He ran 4:24 I believe as a Soph. Never ran XC, played C team Football. He could have been the best guy on a xc team that placed 2nd at state without him.

At this pace, this Gillespie guy will be ahead of Fernandez for good in a few years!

I wouldn't call it a blue collar program. Smith prevents people from training hard, prefering that they just jog around all the time. It's more like a namby pamby program.
So, namby pamby training consisting of little more than jogging around with no hard training is getting German injured all the time?
Hmmm...?????
