The reason Illinois and maybe some others don't keep their instate talent is Illinois is unaffordable. You can go out of state and pay the same as in state. Also since Illinois gives very and I do mean VERY little aid for academics you can go out of state way cheaper than in state. Michigan is also pricey. No reciprocity with Wisconsin either.
Assuming that it is only Minnesota, that reciprocity makes relatively little difference because it means some Wisconsin talent leaks to Minnesota (e.g., Rombaugh) and conversely (e.g., Mellon is one of five Minnesota guys listed on the UW roster for T&F).
By the way, I guess Finnerty DID run once this indoor season although he is not listed on the entry link posted above (and 8:11 is not that impressive but since he already had a red-shirt season I guess it did not matter that he raced just once -- what I remember hearing a months ago is that his back was a problem):

Illinois is $ 31,875.00 for instate tuition 14,500 general studies $18,000 when you pick a major. 9,800 room and board, over $2000 in fees and $1000 in books. And I recommend you pick a major freshman year. If you wait till your soph year and don't get accepted, it's to late, you won't ever get into your major unless you transfer. For out of state it's right about $45,000.00 per year. Ohio state is low $20,000.00's for instate. Not sure about Wisconsin or Minnesota. Forget about room/board/books etc., only tuition and required fees matter in this context. You have to live somewhere and the somewhere amounts tend to be similar and are not affected by in-state or out-of-state.
Thus, $14,5000 and $18,000 are the relevant numbers, plus possibly the $2000 in fees, which might include deposits and not be fees (and thus not count).

Why don't you take an entire fall off due to injury and run an 8:11 as your first step on a comeback.
Illinois is 32000 instate. Ohio state is less than 20000. While most kids benefit from staying in state, Illinois is Definatly an exception. Unless you want to pay 70% more than kids from Ohio.

Back injuries are different -- the underlying pathology does not necessarily go away over 5 months.

Minnesota should end up being 10-15, at least, clear of Indiana and Wisconsin. Nobody else has a chance.
Fun strategy from Wisconsin in the 3000 to have Brill take it out hard (60, 2:05, 3:11. 4:17) with Connor following and then have Darling "leading" the chase pack until Bayer had enough. I think they got the lead up to 6 or so seconds. Enough to get everybody's attention, but not enough to have any doubt about whether they would get run down. They made Bayer work for it. Connor, to his credit, hung right in there after Bayer caught him with about 3 to go, give or take. Poore fell off the back of the top 3 with about 2 to go. Mead was never in it. Great race to watch.
Can't wait for the Mile tomorrow and then see who has what left for the 5000. Ahmed, Krause and Mayhew will be fresh.
I am sure that wisconsin knew that Bayer would hang tough as well as a few others, but they successfully hurt guys like mead and other guys that were on the verge of points by making it an honest race
