you can feel the sadness and pain in Morrissey's voice
I opened this thread hoping to see Jeff Buckley (Hallalelujah), Johnny Cash (Hurt), Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees), and The Beatles (In My Life). Thank you.
I'll throw out Patty Griffin (Heavenly Day) and Damien Rice (Nine Crimes) and Willie Nelson (Unchained Melody). I'll admit that anything by Patty Griffin can reduce me to tears in seconds.
Back later after I review my iPod. Tremendous topic. Can't wait to check out the videos and songs already listed.

Levon Helms - Wide River to Cross.
Just heard it today. Honestly, made me cry, mostly because I learned what Levon Helms has been through in his life, and that song seemed so appropriate for him. I don't know who wrote the song originally (Buddy Miller?), but Levon's versions is my favorite. It's a great song for anybody who has struggled in life, which includes most of us.

I've probably listened to this song 5x today already. This is unbelievably beautiful. His voice is so rich and real. Truly amazing.
This thread has been amazing. Keep 'em coming if you still got 'em.
Janice Ian. Should be a time of reflection and an anthem for most of the Letsrun punks. Instead they'll continue to act out inappropriately with vulgarity and hostility towards others.

Be sure to check out the version I posted as it's a different studio take from the famous one.
This one also touches me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0F4iXEzOqYI seriously hope someone talented covers that someday.
Also, Prince's "Purple Rain," especially the live versions where he really puts himself all the way out in his solos. There was a version up on youtube briefly about two years ago that had such a beautiful solo that I cried every time.
Excuse my multiple posts on this thread, but another song that stands out in my mind is Time (The Revelator) by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The music starts a couple minutes in. I love folk music.

Also, I am a huge fan of this version of Lua by Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch.

And this version of "I'll Fly Away", an old traditional, by Gillian Welch, Allison Krause and Emmylou Harris.

If you can't tell already, I'm a huge fan of Gillian Welch.
I was hooked on this one for a while: Simon and Garfunkel's "Only Living Boy in NY"
Great song after a bad day, I play it in my car a lot
I would say most of the songs on Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days. I think Naked as We Came, and Fever Dream are amazing, if I had to choose.

Kathys song-Van Morrison
This one makes me weep instantly when I hear it. It's in D Minor, the saddest of all keys:

... Willie Nelson (Unchained Melody)...
With about 250 covers you would think someone would post the Todd Duncan version from the movie "Unchained". I have a 12 song CD - different versions from the first list maker Al Hibbler to Il Divo-.
Hibbler 1955:
