This reliance, or assumed need, of resources is a huge issue with the state of running in the U.S.
A pair of shoes, some healthy food, and being surrounded by positive people is all that is needed for a super talent to succeed. running is simple.
Damn right. There is one rubberized 400m track in the entire country of Kenya. And they do just fine. All you need is the above mentioned, plus the will to work your ass off.
Also, Jenny will do just fine with NB. If anyone watched the FloTrack coverage, she chose NB based on its corporate philosophy. She wanted to be with a company where she could feel part of a family. Furthermore, NB has the money to make available any resources she may need.
Finally, may I point out that NB predates Nike by about 60 years?
Adam Goucher ran 13:10 when he was in Colorado, and 13:10 after he moved to Oregon. Therefore, moving to Oregon and being coached by Salazar doesn't mean you'll improve.
Going by what I read of how Salazar trains people, I don't know if he does anything special.
Mark Whetmore has helped more than a few runners become quality runners while at Colorado. After they leave Colorado, I don't know.
I think you're leaving out a bit of the story there (intentionally I'm sure) as between those two 13:10s, Goucher ran so poorly and inconsistently that he nearly hung up the spikes. So, getting back to the kind of fitness he had in 99, (13:10 #1) to run it again in 06 is amazing. Too bad for Adam that he has ankles made of glass or we would have surly seen another American under 13 there. But, you are right, it's more than just a coach. It's the whole set-up. You need a great group of like-ability athletes to train with and a fall-back plan to rely on when thing get off the rails. WIth the Oregon Project, as soon as any ache or pain turns into something more, the whole team in place there is "on it" and the athlete in question can continue training. I want that Jenny as I think she is one of the rare ones, in terms of drive and talent, that can hang with anyone on two legs.

Perhaps something similar to what was done with Galen Rupp should be done. Jenny runs in Oregon, but Whetmore makes up the training program rather than Salazar.
If Salazar can act as if Lananna can't come with a good program for Rupp, then perhaps Whetmore can do the same with Salazar.
Wouldn't it kind of suck if only a couple of coaches in Oregon had the opportunity to train elite athletes?
Perhaps Jenny knows something about loyalty.
I'm pretty sure that Jenny can run every bit as fast in NB's as she can in any other shoe and she's going to get a LOT of individual attention at NB too, which can't hurt. They are the second largest running company in the US. I'm thinking they can probably get her whatever she needs.
Good decision, I think. I can't wait to see her next big jump.
It's called the Olympic Training Center. She has access to everything the Nike kids have in Colorado Springs, just a short drive from Boulder. When she needs to go to sea level, she can train in Chula Vista. She'll have immediate access to all of the best training equipment, doctors, psychologists, and facilities. And she didn't have to sell her soul to the Swoosh. Futhermore, there's something to be said about being happy where you live and train and the people you're around.
Yes, 100 miles from Boulder to CoSpings is just a quick drive
Have I missed the one athlete that Wetmore has continued to develop at an elite level after their CU time was done
I'd feel a lot better for Jenny if she was being coached by Jay
his runners either adapt to the high mileage and do well for a bit until they need more stimulus or get injured and never reach their potential

Calling the guy a d-bag for blatantly violating the directive of my post (all the while bragging about his alleged 13:36) is kind of harsh, but congrats to him- that's pretty fast. But this is Letsrun, and you gotta have thick skin if you hope to last...
His alleged 13:36? Look at his posting name - uwxc alum - it's probably withrow. He's right too, you're being a douchebag for asking PRs as if it has any relevancy at all to the discussion at hand.
Did I miss something? I don't recall Francis insinuating the guy's PRs had anything to do with anything: he just asked what they are. You guys are quick to call people douchebags, ya douchebags.
Try WC and OG teams.

I'm also worried about this choice JB has made - she has said over and over how important a team is to her, and now what? She and Maggie Vesey are a team?
I'm sure JB and Wetmore have thought through all this and found a way to make it work, but NB? My guess is that something at NB appealed to her character - She so wants to be a good person - you hear it in everything she says and how she acts around people. So maybe somehow working for NB struck her as sort of a better moral choice than Nike, Adidas or Puma.
But in the end I agree that if she has a bad Olympics or doesn't run sub 4 again, she will end up at Nike.
She may wind up at adidas or Saucony. Doubt she'll ever sink far enough for Nike to be a factor.
You look really stupid now!
The Oregon jerks once again showed what a bunch of losers they are.
All they can do is talk. On the track they FAIL because they don't have the right stuff between the ears.
there is complete silence from all the armchair quarterbacks that make up the majority of letsrun on this barringer deal. they're so quick to bag on people, yet when their predictions and hating is refuted with a performance such as barringer's, they're no wehere to be seen.
How do you like them apples?
I happen to know Jenny and Jason, fine young people the both of them. To the person who revived this year and a half old thread, shame on you. Jenny is class all the way, focused soley on performing as hard as she can. She has no interest at all about any negativity, whether it be from naysayers or people who claim to defend her but bring a negative angle to the situation. This lady is humble as they come in victory and honorable in defeat. Let's leave it at that and not put things back in peoples face. Because when it's done that way, you are no better than the haters! CONGRATS JENNY way to represent yourself, your country and honest running.

Comments like this reveal much more about you than about Barringer, Nike, or Oregon.
Seriously, I've asked you before and you've never answered: what do you have against Oregon athletes? Jenny B's success before or after leaving Wetmore has NOTHING to do with Oregon. I'm sure most Oregon based athletes and fans wish Jenny well and feel excited about her win.
The Killer...i don't know what happened this year with OTC or the Salazar group but the injury list is quite long.....with the facilities they have it indicates they are really pushing the boundries of training...Goucher=femoral stress reaction, Ritz=achilles, Amy Begley=achilles, Solinksky=hamstring, Wheating=hamstring....
Jenny has a good support network/coaches... when you hear the post race interview by Jenny she said they shut down the 2010 race season to recover from her femoral stress reaction. She comes back and wins Gold.
You look at Goucher and she tries to run through her injury?
