Can anyone break down the #'s of who were these runners/ what was their motivation?
Let's go with 1978 to 1987.
We obviously all understand that most of the 1978-80 crowd had to be running some serious college and high school before toeing the line to sub 2:20.
There were famous Olympians '72-'76, large marathon winners 70's- early 80's.
I have to agree with Fredo, the national class to international class barrier has to be impeding the motivation of current runners.
The solution is easy. Fly yourself to Paris, get yourself some new clean spikes, go easy on the pastries while in Paris. Toe the line in the 10000M. Just cruise, don't strain too much the first 12 1/2 laps- just follow those 3 guys, the last 12 1/2 laps give it your best shot- have some balls- 12:56 and it's all yours for the taking- actually let's add a safety cushion, Bekele could of pushed a little harder- who knows? Let's go with 12:53 to be on the safe side. You want to beat El G.? Also easy. Just run the last 800M in 1:46 or faster. I think the Kenyans are going to start to focus more on the steeple now, they can't compete on the 10000M anymore. Although, 26:30 with a 2 minute PB is impressive. If Meb or AC or whoever improve 2 minutes- just think of the possibilities. And let's not forget Deena is a ligit shot a medal- 2:21 last season is for real. Ladies: T. Dibaba, misses school registration- Has to make a choice- you either get married or live the Hollywood running life- start running, it's really easy- within a few years you can win World's. Some guys started running to get a dowry? I mean of all the ways to get $$$ in G8 countries- this start running- they hand out huge paychecks- withing a couple of years- you're in the $$$. How many Americans would think of distance running as an EASY means to $$$- they're all doing it- easy really- you don't even need shoes to start off with.
The field has changed, I'm not taking anything away from the yesteryear greats, but Frank-Pre were in college training for 1972, as far as I know. How many NCAA's can immediately jump into Olympic ranks- Can Torres/ Goucher run sub-27 out of college- that's where the level is at.
So... who are these runners of 78-87?
5-10 of them with international aspirations? Or winning large road races.
50- winning local marathons or top 10's at large marathons?
100- hanging around talking shop- running 100+ mile weeks- Just having a blast running 2:15-2:20?
How many are the same names brought over from year to year with a few add-on's and deletions? They weren't running one single year and a new crop the next year?
Where were these 100-250 folks coming from? HS elites, NCAA elites that kept running, fit local's deciding this running thing is pretty cool- let's slam some training and run 2:15-2:20?
Where were the top brass, let's go with top 10, at international track events? Track was a second priority to marathon racing???
Can anyone break down who were these runners of the past??? I'm not looking for names, but where the hell where they stemming from and what was the basic motivation
