Well...Rob Krar was dropping 6:30s during the 2014 Western States 100. That's 100 miles in just under 15 hours, in 90 degree weather...if that's not racing, racing doesn't exist anywhere.

So what? It is still a race. They are seeing who crosses the line first. To Bolt, a 10k would seem like a survival race. Bekele runs long distance because he can't compete at the mile. If he could, he would. That doesn't diminish him as a runner, so why the eff do you think ultra runners are any less for running distances longer than a marathon because their marathon times are not fast enough? GTFU.

You can't tell me that a 150 mile "race" should be considered the same type of event as regular T&F. It's just not the same thing, you're running for days on end.
Again, it devolves into some kind of survival contest, not running.
I met a fat woman at a school car wash. She said she wants to run Western States. Her longest run ever was 8. That's most of the ultra crowd.
Don't know why this thread got bumped, but I still feel the same way.

There's nothing unnatural in hating ultra runners.

Check out some of the elite ultra marathon runners. You might change your mind.
David Goggins does something like 120mpw running and comparable amounts of biking and swimming each week. He also looks like he could throw a VW beetle at you if he was angry. Oh, and he's a Navy Seal. I don't know how anyone could hate someone like that.
My longest run was 3 hours.
I thought I was pretty tough being able to do that, and a bunch of 20 and 15 milers.
I'm bewildered by these people. Met a 60 year old woman who'd run a 100 miler, and I'm like... "I can't even imagine that, doing that, when I was 20 and had run some 120 mile weeks.
It has to be genetic, to have the ability to run that far.
Why do I hate runners so much. Maybe it's because they're all a bunch of skinny type A wimps? Nobody cares how fast/slow/short/far you can run. It's a sport for uncoordinated sissy boys. In fact, I'd say these ultra runners are the only ones with anything like real toughness. But again, nobody cares. Go throw a football or learn to play guitar.
