I forget. USTAF needs more money to send Sandra Farmer Patrick (a drug cheat) to Europe or better yet sending all the USATF cronies to Hawai'ii for their annual convention.

Rest assured, NBC/USA networks are actively pushing for Goucher's admission; just like they did for Carl Lewis (1996 relay).
Agreed. If Adam Goucher runs in the 10,000 meters, it will be a ratings bonanza for NBC. I mean, think about all the young children on playgrounds who want to grow up to be Adam Goucher. Think about all the sports fans who fondly remember the famous Goucher/Kennedy battle in the 5K at the 2000 Trials. Think about how SportsCenter spent 15 minutes on Goucher when he was a surprise runner-up at the 2007 USA Cross Country Championships.
Goucher is ingrained in America's consciousness. No one will watch the 10K if he's excluded.
This is now on Digg. If we get enough people to Digg it we can make this breaking news.

The people working on this are not making money, and the USATF has plenty of resources. It's the organization's fault if it's stubborn enough to fight this.
I know. I agree and was just expanding on that point. USATF should pay for making decisions that are either corrupt or inept, if not both.

I could not agree more. NBC probably dropped a cool mil on John Chaplin and offered Glen Latimer the permanent host seat on Meet the Press to make this happen.
Sandra Farmer Patrick and Antonio Pettigrew (the two athlete reps on the Board) could not be reached for comment.
It was pointed out in the other thread on this that USATF rules read:
"If more than 24 report for the 10,000 Meters or the Open Women's 5000 Meters, the event should be run in sections of no more than 24, but may be run as heats of no more than 24, with no more than 20 advancing to the final of the 10,000 Meters and no more than 16 advancing to the final of the 5000 Meters."http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=2554725&page=1
If I were Adam, I would be ashamed to get a pass when others more deserving were staying home. Shame on you, Adam Goucher. He should have refused to run on a pass no matter what his stupid coach or Nike says. Have some balls.

oooohh.. you pulled the "shame on you" card. I guess goucher is REALLY shaking in his boots now.
don't forget the stern finger wag, too
http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/346940/2/istockphoto_346940_senior_shame_on_you.jpgUPDATE: Goucher stays in, and all runners with a faster "B" time than Goucher are also invited -- if they protested their exclusion.
So now we will see if USATF's original decision was the correct one. Will Goucher run faster than the other "B" runners who are now getting in? These other "B" runners would be sitting home if it weren't for Goucher. They ought to thank Goucher, but go on hating USATF.
Where is the official news that the others made it?
While they're playing with their own rules, they should add a stipulation that runners will get pulled off the track if they are about to get lapped... at least until they're down to just 24 left on the track, the intended field size.
great. more great news coverage for track and field.

This is yet another reason for everyone to support the USOC in their attempt to force USATF to reduce their bloated organization structure. Get rid of the fat and the hangers-on, get the special interests off the board, and maybe USATF won't need Nike's money any more....and these things won't happen.
Personally, I think companies like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and Asics, which sponsor athletes directly, also being a major sponsor of the national federation constitutes a MAJOR conflict of interest, and I think the Stevens Amateur Sports Act should be amended to prohibit this (although the money has to come from somewhere).
Rules are not supposed to be different for Nike athletes.
Where would that money come from? Exactly.
It's all about Nike or was all about Nike. I would not be surprised if the trials are pulled out of Oregon in 2012 after the USOC gets done with them. Nike (Oregon) were given all the meets WITHOUT bidding for them because of Craig Mashbacks relationship and move into the position with Nike. He was setting himself up for success and why not, he's a business man, but in no was was that fair or ethical. It clearly states in all the USATF bid proposal packets that all facilities wishing to bid must submit a bid, do a presitation at the national convention, and submit a $25K deposit (might be 50K, I have to double check that). This was not done for 2010, 2011, or 2012 they were just given to Nike. This is clearly against the by-laws set up by USATF.
This in no way is fair to the athletes from outside the West coast. I competed in the trials in 2004 and it cost me $2100. I retired after that point because I couldn't support myself and afford that much to travel while training. If I knew for sure that there was a possibility of the meet being centralized or on the east coast maybe I would have continued to train but it didn't look that way, which has been proven.
It's BS for all the athletes who are forced to travel to the West Coast every June or July.
No Nike you can not take over the world!

Note: 24 is the minimum field according to Amby:
From Runnersworld story:
"According to USATF’s stated requirements regarding the 10,000, the field should have a minimum of 24 runners"
Note: if more than 24 report for the 10,000, it must be either split into sections of no more than 24 per section or run in qualifying heats of no more than 24 per heat with 20 advancing to a final.
Well this sucks. I would have been in the top 32 in the women's race but because I was not in the top 24 I didn't get a chance to compete.
Maybe there is something shady here.
The problem is not with Goucher...but with USATF. They let in who they want and exclude others. The same attitude has been seen in the marathon trials as well. They make their own rules. If Goucher is #25 do you think they will run two heats? Why? Because they don't even follow the rules they themselves quote.
I hope Goucher is in, as is the rest of the guys. and in my opinion the Olympics and trials should run a semi- and a final for the 10k as they did back in the day.
No, the problem's still with both USATF and the Salazar group.
