I have made well over 1000 trips to work and back on my bikes. Ironically, my wife is out of town for the week and the two kids have pre-school and school/after-school activities that require car transportation usually, so I will get many fewer rides than usual.
I am a P.E teacher and I make the 14 mile round trip daily. And a quick hour run to release a day of stress. So the bike ride is a good shakeout after a run. When I pass kids on my road bike coming to school they always try and race me. Other than them thinking biking shorts and running shorts are unherd of and uncool, it is really rewarding to have kids think it is cool to get outside and exercise is fun and acceptable.
Well, I'm looking forward to doing it once I move into my new place, but it isn't going to be a daily exercise. 20 miles each way is too much to do every day on top of mileage. Couple of times a week though, for sure.
The good part is that the vast majority of it is on a paved/gravel path that doesn't cross too many roads, so at least I'll be able to keep up a decent average speed. I figure it'll take me about 1:15 on an average day, closer to 1:05 if I'm feeling particularly peppy.
My wife and I are moving to Colorado next year and i defintly plan on biking to work. I think it's 10-12 miles one way, so I'm planning on driving to work Mon's to leave a change of clothes for Tues-Thurs. and drive to work Fri's to bring everything back home. So I figure 3 days a week of doing this will save $$$ in gas.
