.) The Ethiopian strategy team. Whoever is setting up “team tactics” & athlete event selection for them needs to be fired. Across all middle & long events (outside the marathon), it seemed that plans - or the lack thereof - had a significant impact on outcome. Without the jets that Aregawi found in the last 50m of the 10K, it was an epic sh*t show all around. The marathon performances saved their Olympics. Without them?!?!
.) The men’s 5K (or keep the little q’s). Change the number of heats (3 vs 2) & keep the time qualifiers for this event. (Otherwise repechage was interesting.) While there may be less of an issue with the system when the 5K are earlier in the meet schedule, like it was for the women, but the jogfest/crash-up derby that the men’s heats became was embarrassing. Add to that the lack of key players (Kejelcha, Aregawi, Cheptegei, Kiplimo, due to scratch national incompetence, or Ahmed, Nur due to crashes) made the Jingy redemption hallow.
.) While it was ridiculous to expect Beleke/Kipcgoge fireworks, I still held out hopes. So I was disappointed with this but the men’s marathon was pretty exciting. That course! Tola’s courageous move on the critical hill!
.) NBC’s coverage. Why can the sport not package a product we can get the world to rally behind. Our sport is currently on fire with incredible racing, fast times & a really compelling narratives. But our organizing/doping controls bodies (WA, USATF, WADA, USADA) continue to fail to answer the bell equal to athlete performance. We need to tell the stories better, place these narratives directly in the way of the casual fan to stubble upon or push into their frames/feeds & remove the barriers to entry (qualifying process, continued doping concerns, etc). Track & field could/should be THE Olympic sport. Our governing bodies fail us.
.) Letesenbet Giday. The sport needs this woman. Especially the distances. She is the potential star, the Kipchoge of the track. No one else has the race savvy, star power, sport love to compare. I actually think Hassan has all these capacities but her life story seems to only bring divisiveness. Whether her association with Saladbar or her exile/fleeing from Ethiopia or her Muslim faith, many people fail to be inspired by her. I truly missed Giday in these Games.
