That response was meant for Run5k. He blindly sticks up for elite distance runners, even when there is nothing to stick up for. I read and article in Runners World in which Pre led a race like an idiot (and in this race, that IS how he ran...underestimating his competition, immensely, and racign with the cocky attitude he wa sos submerged in throughout his career) against the GREAT, Olympic silver medalist Norpoth, got kicked down, then...after the race...went up to the runner, got up in his face and called him a "Chickenshit." Pre was a very good runner, but I don't understand why people are so inspired by his attitude. His attitude is the LAST thing that I would want to be inspired by, or I would want other, younger runners to be inspired by. You put in the work....you run....you win. You don't get sore when you lose (which also did against the australians), or yell at your competition for beating you. Pre's front running strategy was neat to watch, but it was a strategy nonetheless, and for other runners to formulate strategies to adapt to that hardly makes them the "chickenshits" pre so vocally expressed them to be.
That's just my feelings, really...there are athletes from that time period that set much better examples to what running is truly about than Steve Prefontaine.
