If it weren't for the UP (which really should be part of Wisconsin and probably few "Michiganders"have ever actually visited) Michigan wouldn't border Lake Superior and then would only border two Great Lakes ( and a very tiny border with Lake Erie), so its seems a little misleading that you guys call yourselves the Great Lakes State (and say things like "it's in our blood and being").
But see, the UP is Michigan. That's kind of like saying the panhandle isn't Florida, or Oahu isn't Hawaii. Dumb attempt at a point. Give me another US state that borders 4 of the GL. I'll wait ...
Not a state, but Ontario borders four (Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario)
I would like to see how many from Indiana and Illinois.
Reason is people from southern Indiana & southern Illinois have no experience being around such a huge body of water.
Us "Michiganders" are surrounded by the GL's. It's in our blood and being. We know weather can turn in a instant even on nice days.
I know how to snow ski pretty good. But that doesn't make me a expert skiing in Utah\Colorado back country on a "blue bird day" unaware of avalanche conditions.

He died at the outlet of the Sable river where it goes into Lake Michigan. I've been there dozens of times and people are always swimming and playing in that area. Sad someone died there.
