Worst coverage ever. NBC is more and more inept on field events. Normally a world record attempt in the high jump is followed all the way through. We get a feel for all the prior attempts and whether there's a legitimate chance. I remember Barshim and Lasitskene barely missing and being in agony.
Today there was no suspense whatsoever. They aren't going to show the 2:07 attempt unless she cleared it. And then as soon as that clip finished and they immediately show her standing there with a clean slate at 2:10, it guarantees she'll clear that also.
The pursuit of that record has been focus for decades on YouTube videos and elsewhere. Mahuchikh said recently that she and her coach changed things in her training toward breaking the world record. All of that should have been mentioned. Instead it was here here like a platter.
This makes Mahuchikh the favorite to be named European Athletics Female Athlete of the Year, if she wins gold in Paris. That award is a big deal with a gala banquet that everyone attends. The past two years Bol won it. Much deserved. But with Mahuchikh sitting there as runnerup last year I remember thinking it would soon be her turn.
Have you heard of Michael Johnson Track? Distance Running and Field Events are being phased out.
Pretty impressive after having to google exactly how high that is in feet and inches. You’d think a letsrun piece would mention that at least one time lol.
Didn't you go to school? Or was it like 60 years ago?
For me it was 75 years ago! Meters remain enigmas.
I know this is a running forum, but I think a 37 years old athletics world record broken deserves its own thread
2.10m!!!
She jumped 6.88 meters in the high jump. That is amazing. I usually think announcements of world records are fake because they often wind up being age group, indoor, or even just meet records. But 2.10 also means nothing to me because I am a stubborn American, I guess.
Actually 6.88976 feet. But no one cares to respond to Jed Clampett anyway so it does not matter.
