This doesn't make sense. You have to remove Bor and Rotich but you have to add in Wilkinson so really he should be shooting for the person who is 37th, which is Tomas Habarta of Czech Republic. But as others have noted, some federations will decline spots and the rankings could change after this weekend. If Corrigan runs 8:16 or 8:17, things could get messy waiting to see how it all shakes out.
Would it change anything if Jager showed up at this race and beat Corrigan?
I would think technically yes, although would be a pretty classless move by the vet. I couldn’t see him having that in him to do, but maybe with a lil push from Jerry he would consider it. I highly doubt he tries to spoil the guys plan, rather he’s going to sit back and let the chips unfold and be ready if he is called onto the team. Jager has nothing to prove at this point his legacy is written all he can do at this point in his career is mess up his legacy and I doubt he wants to do that especially after the whole fancy bears thing that almost took him out.
Ah ok, I was thinking that the math worked out to where Corrigan still needed to run 8:15.XX even if he won. I don't think it would be worth Jager's time or effort to go to this meet just to displace Corrigan by one place. There's certainly no guarantee that Jager could beat him anyway, as we saw at the trials. Plus, it would make Jager look like a huge prick.
A more important issue tomorrow night in Philadelphia is the significant chance of thunderstorms. This race may be delayed - now that might actually be good if Mr. Corrigan's brain is still in the Pacific time zone, and we have seen fast times directly following thunderstorm passage at other meets. However, sitting around Franklin Field waiting isn't all that much fun or conducive to fast times, and this will be a warm front, not a cold front.
It doesn't really matter. The U.S. is hopelessly weak in the steeplechase, with ZERO chance of a medal. And zero chance of even being in sight when the winner crosses the line.
It matters to Corrigan. If he qualifies it will be international experience for a 22 YO who may continue to develop.
On a larger scale, it matters because of the concerns about the influence of money on the qualifying process.
Alright, I hope the best for Corrigan. An American in the Olympic final would be a miracle. If that happens, he'll be 25 seconds behind the winner.
This is absolutely disgraceful. A meet with a certain amount of prize money is supposed to offer extra points because it’s a higher quality meat that people knew about it for a long time and thus could enter. To up the prize money on like one days notice so a college educated white guy can go to the Olympics is absurd. What if the person missing out wasn’t Jager but was instead some poor black guy from Botswana or something?
and then rooks is going to purposely drop out? How about an honest effort rule? This is like the definition of fixing a sporting match yet And Rory in the tweet is praising it? Bonus points should not count.
This reminds me when everyone in Nike was wearing the cheatwr shoes and no one else had them, and they didn’t realize how much against the spirit of their he sport this was.
Should jager fans just raise money so he gets a random Kenyan to come in and win it so he doesn’t get the bonus points?
And Rojo thinks this is about race,... because Rojo thinks everything that happens on Earth is about race,... because Rojo thinks about race 24 hours of every day he's alive.
Rojo, love you man, but sometimes you seem critical and outraged just to be critical and outraged. Every system has inducements to try and nudge people a certain direction. And when you do, little workarounds, come up like this, and some people will like or not like.
But so what? they’re racing. If somebody didn’t want to lose a ranking spot, based on this, then they should’ve been ranked higher.
Sometimes? That's what he does all the time.... to generate more clicks. That's his business model with this website.

Someone donates a ton of prize $$ to this dying sport and you think it's a terrible idea? All of a sudden YOU are worried about equity and fairness!?
This is yet another argument for doing away with the world ranking system. It's confusing, opaque, and can be gamed. Just stick with time qualifiers, which are clear and simple..
They probably want full fields. What if there are not enough time qualifiers to fill the fields? The Olympics are not like a high school or college meet where rounds get combined or eliminated if there are not enough competitors. Schedules are set years in advance.

Sir, I beg you: please proof read your posts. Hire an editor. Use spell check. If this is worsening, ask your medical provider for help, you may be having a stroke. Posting like this severely undermines your credibility.

It matters who gets "olympian" next to their name. If it doesn't, why care about sport at all?
When we have steeplechase chase guys running 7:57-8:05, then who makes the team matters. When there's a tiny chance that an American will actually make the final and zero chance of an American even appearing on the final straightaway when the winner crosses the line, then I don't think these ancillary little benefits mean anything.
Mormons will always do stuff like this for other Mormons, they see it as an investment in a potential ambassador for their faith so they’ll donate like crazy for a slim chance to put a Mormon on the starting line at the Olympics.
you could have typed a more descriptive title. you kids are going to have a hard time in the real world
You could have used proper grammar in your sentences. I hope your children won't suffer from such petty ineptitude and will have someone competent to look up to.
