Very interesting run. You knew watching the race what would happen, but she held on better than I expected. She's at least in position to take a spot if one of the top 3 drops, which is probably the best outcome possible.
I think she was banking on Karissa not being quite so good. Her strategy was perfect for the #3 spot otherwise. There was no way she was beating St Pierre or Cranny.
If she can develop some speed, she'll be a major threat. She needs to get her 1500 times down.
St Pierre's son running onto the track with her is my favorite moment of the Trials so far.
She can only improve her strength, like Young did. It’s hard to see her ever running sub-4:10.
There are many runners who have improved their speed. She should be able to run low-4s just on strength. With all her cross training, you'd expect her to be underdeveloped. Really not hard to imagine her making a leap.
But if you're right and 4:10 is her ceiling, she'll never run faster than 14:50.
Count me in as someone who had been a little tired of "Valbymania," but this race made me gain a ton of respect for her. You could see how hard she was pushing to maintain contact even after the pros passed her. She knew what she had to do to have any shot at the team and went for it, refusing to give up even when she knew her chances were slipping. I hope she can make the team in 2028.
Same sentiments here. She's put herself into a position where the possibility of Paris 2024 is still open as an alternate, although I hope she doesn't make it because that would mean an injury to one of the 3.

In an interview, Mike Smith said that Young didn’t improve his foot speed and it was increasing his fitness, that resulted in his significant improvement since XC.
On a comparative basis, Young is far better than Valby. He’s 22 seconds off the WR in the 5, and 42 for the 10, compared to 53 and 1:50, for Valby.
Exactly! It was the only option she had as she doesn't have a chance out-kicking the others in the last 800. I'm not a Valby fan but I like that she made them run an honest pace and she fought to the end.

In response to your 1500m comments, Tuohy does have good middle distance speed and has frequently run 1500m/mile and set a high school record for the mile. Like many slow-twitchers before her, such as Virgin, Clarke, Salazar and Ritz, she has avoided the 1500/mile. Salazar’s HS PR was 4:19. She has no interest in looking bad at a distance where she’s not competitive.

Why are you even bringing her into this conversation? She didn’t look competitive at this distance either.

She is a 5000/10000m runner so I guess she shouldn’t race at all?
This doesn't make sense. Why wait to 'go pro' until you work on your ability to change gears. I've been doing that since middle school track...
No disrespect to any athlete but when our adoration of the person corrupts our ability to point out common sense, then I can't really take all of this seriously.
That's if she can stay injury free with more running and less cross training.
Her cross training is certainly not a problem.
Pounding out more miles with her janky form could be a bigger problem. They need to work on it and get it fixed as first priority, before significantly increasing mileage.
No, her tactic ruined her chance. WTF is wrong with you people
Not sure what you are babbling about, but anyone that knows anything about the sport and about Valby, know that she raced using the tactics best suited to her running as fast as possible last night.

She does a lot of cross training because she has to, to avoid injuries. Running high mileage will never be an option for her.

Yes and no. We know she is at least capable of running sub-67 400’s. So if she can eventually string together 25 laps of 71 sec 400’s (just on improved aerobic strength), she would be the fastest American woman to run a 10000m.

That depends upon the nature of whatever is contributing to her janky form. There is potential to greatly improve her running economy, unless she has some abnormality that will prevent improving her form.
