"World rankings period: 01 JUL 2023 - 30 JUN 2024"
"*NB: the final list of athletes/teams eligible for entry through the world rankings, will be that of 12 May 2024 for Marathon and 7 July 2024 for all events."
All a bit confusing but I now assume July 7? Not sure
So the athletes ranked for the period ending 30 Jun will be ranked july 7th. Clear as mud. Looks like Paris DL could be used then.
I feel like the "window" for establishing your rank (based on points) closes on June 30th but the list of those who are "eligible for entry through world rankings" will be released on July 7th.
They might just be giving themselves and coaches/managers a week to double check that the rankings are correct before announcing them officially.
Then, once the list is announced, the athletes and/or their federations will be able to start making final decisions about who is racing which events.
If I were Ed Eyestone, I'd be on the phone right now trying to find which california high school will let him stage a meet. Rooks could be a pacer and several other guys on the team could do 1-1.5k; Corrigan just has to hang on.
Is there a California high school with steeplechase amenities?
His coach seems to have a meet set up. Nonetheless, Chabot College in Hayward California is having an all comers on Thursday evening and hosted this year's Mike Fanelli Distance Carnival.
Update: Just bumped into Ed Eyestone at Hayward Field. He confirmed that something is in the works for Corrigan to make an attempt on the standard next week. Wouldn't say when or where but he expects there will be a few other steeplers in the race that may be able to help pace.
USATF also confirmed that he is allowed to chase. 8:15.00 is the standard. Evan Jager's fate hangs in the balance.
Gault, thank you for being "boots on the ground." I appreciate your work for this website and think you are its number one journalistic asset.
So many posts on this thread were just resolved by your information.
If my friends and I see you in Eugene tomorrow, pints (at the Paddock) are on us.
Could they set one up at nike? There is a steeple pit on the Michael Johnson track there and definitely enough runners in the area to find people to pace, cheer, etc.
Could very well be that Jager is bumped out of the rankings once other countries’ national championships occur and kids from countries, like Czech, run 8:20 and win. Welcome to Coe’s new world! (Leonard Korir knows all about it)
They need 3 marks. Jager is now like 50 points clear if you include his points from today.
If Jager offers to pace this last chance steeple for corrigan it would be a great move for his legacy. If corrigan makes the team Jager gets to leave the sport as a potential winner of the world athletics sportsmanship award, if corrigan doesn’t get the time Jager can go to Paris without any feelings of guilt. Thoughts?
Here are all the options currently on the WA calendar with a 3000m SC excluding other countries' regional or National Championships where he could compete OC:
June 26: Meeting de Blangnac, FRA (F)
June 27-29: Kazakh Athletics Cup, KAZ (F)
June 28-30: Jack Brow Memorial, CAN (F)
June 29: Torneo Invierno Porteño, ITA (F)
June 29: Warszawska Liga Lekkoatletyczna, POL (F)
June 29: MAA Circuit, MRI (F)
June 29: Copa RS de Atletismo, BRA (F)
June 29: Troféu IVOTI de Atletismo, BRA (F)
June 30: Scottish National Athletics League, GBR (F)
So unless they're adding a steeple to Penn or he's going to the Canadian National Champs, the Jack Brow meet looks like the most likely.
Thank you. I was wondering if this would be the case. I don’t see Corrigan running 8:15 (I think that’s the standard) in the tight timeline
Corrigan needs 3 marks prior to June 30 for a ranking, and to be in the Olympic q window. For trials he gets bonus points too for place.
Perhaps an 8:20 run next weekend would get him close.
The mere fact that all of us (the best informed fans in the country) are unsure/debating this, and that the announcers apparently cannot translate this in plain speak to the broader audience, suggests this system is broken.
Isn't there an issue with that NACAC performance being counted toward Jager's ranking? As per the WA regulations the World rankings period is 01 JUL 2023 - 30 JUN 2024.

There's an exception for Area Championships:
"1.2.4 Ranking Period
c. In order to ensure that performances achieved at the Area Senior Outdoor Championships are calculated in the Rankings, the latest editions of the Area Senior Outdoor Championships are included in the Rankings calculation regardless of whether they fall in the Events’ respective Ranking Period, given that they were held within 3 full calendar years (e.g. after 1 January in the 3rd year prior to the date of the Rankings.)"

It's really not that hard to understand. For the casual fan/broader audience it's enough to know that there's a way to qualify via a world ranking system if an athlete doesn't hit the standard, and that to be included in this world ranking an athlete needs three good performances. Someone on the first page already did the correct math within 20 minutes after the thread got started, so not very complicated.

Great research but why do track fans need to play this guessing game? Why didn’t Eyestone just announce which meet they’re going to do? This sport can be such a joke at times. They make it so difficult for fans to follow. Can you imagine the NHL not announcing the date, time, and location of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final?
How is it that the announcers don’t know that Rooks ranking will easily get him in. What a joke.
Leigh Diffey has been messing this up for 3 years now. Literally watch the finals of any distance US final on youtube and he is shrieking about an athlete not having the standard on half of them. Somebody needs to teach him about the concept of a World Ranking, he still doesn't get it and it confuses any casual fan tuning in
Truly not trying to defend the man, but this is much more on the producers. I'm quite sure they are far from track fans. They are probably hoping to build up enough on their resume to move into football or basketball

Unless Corrigan sets up a time trial by the end of next week, Jager is on the team.

There's an all Comers Meet at Chabot College on Thursday. But those meets normally don't have the Steeple.
