Don't know where you got the assumption that running is a non-contact sport. Runners are allowed to protect their space. Runners have pushed, elbowed, tripped, even punched other runners without being DQed. And that's only the Ingebrigtsens.

There was a lot of shoving going on early. So what
No one is disputing that some contact is to be expected, but no one is saying that tripping should be allowed. There is a point where contact is excessive, and that is usually when one runner is impeded by another's actions. From the stumbling stride, it seems Kessler was clearly (but inconsequentially in this instance) impeded. If he had fallen, I'm sure there would have been a valid protest. Then again, if a frog had wings....
everybody arguing in this thread is soft
Engels has been assessed a flagrant 1 foul. Kessler will get 2 shots and the ball in the finals tomorrow

Threads like this demonstrate how most people on this website have never actually raced.
It’s not a ‘shove’. It’s preventative to make sure runners don’t get tangled. If you run an aggressive line, you get bumped. No more, no less.
Does he have that expectation? Or did you make that up so you could pretend to be a bad ass?
Back in my racing days, we carried a switchblade in our jockey strap for moments like these.
You kids are soft!
Disagree a bit here.
Kessler was in fine position but at a point he drifts a bit inward. Engels is on the rail and has NOWHERE to go. He adjusts Kessler as I would have. Shortly after Kessler slides down again. This drew a stronger shove from Engels. More forceful than was necessary.
In the end, the runner on the rail simply CANNOT have a guy slide down on him. Cannot allow that as there is no where for the rail runner to go.
In the end, none of this mattered.
