I totally agree. This was a big performance and should have gotten more coverage. I think it was just the timing of the meet, at the very very end of a quite busy week of track.
i was wonering how on earth he could have ran a time this good, then i realized he's a disciple of christ. It all makes sense, all things are possible through Him.
The funny thing is Centro was probably winning that race one way or another. His masterpiece was awaiting to be unleashed that day. He's medaled at worlds. His gold was no fluke, just a matter of execution meeting opportunity. Anyone trying to take away from his well earned gold is a clown.
True fans want the best runner to win… which wasnt the case
So only people who root for the winner are true fans?
Everyone has gotten insanely fast at all levels. HS kids of today could be challenging Steve Prefontaine at his best. Sub 4 is no guarantee of all conference in college. Sub 4 won't even win d3. Collegians are now running sub 13. At the elite level, times in the 1230s are being run.
Between wavelight tech and the shoes, times aren't what they used to be.
That may be true, but the shoes aren’t new this year and he crushed the old record by almost 10 seconds. This is probably the first run to match/exceed Rupp’s old pre-shoe record.
People don't seem to understand that the super shoes aren't just about in-competition advantage. Their chief benefit, as empirically confirmed by many coaches I know, is that they reduce the impact and stress on legs during workouts and races, thus allowing much faster recovery and more frequent workouts. Think EPO in the form of shoes. So, a kid who trained and raced 3-4 years with these better shoes was therefore able to do XXX many more workouts/quality runs than kids (and prior generations) who didn't have those shoes, thereby stacking the benefits over the course of a few years. Make sense?
Current crop of seniors are probably the first gen of widespread kids who have trained/raced all or most of their hs careers with the super shoes. Same for the college kids. At some point these times will level off... but the new floor will still be far above the pre-super shoes floor.

I'm curious just how much Simmons and other top HS runners train in super shoes.

Not to mention everyone at almost every level is at least doing <cough> 'marginal gains', if not worse. This sport has completely jumped the shark.
Wavelight is literally only used at diamond league events. It’s all shoes.
Can we get over this "it's the shoes" nonsense?
Shoes have always been an advantage over running barefoot. Track surfaces are better today than they were 50 years ago. They're faster and "unnatural." Training methods have been improved thanks to a better understanding of physiology.
The shoes are not the singular difference for a HS kid running 13:25.86. What would he have run otherwise? 13:40? That would still be one heck of a run and worthy of discussion. The sport and the technology of the sport is improving. Let's enjoy it for #%$*& sake.
Look, shoes matter and they always have. Shoes in 1990 were better than shoes in 1920. Obviously the new shoes are a leap forward but we’ve always had leaps forward, whether it’s fiberglass poles, spikes, whatever. It’s not really difficult to see that recent advances aren’t out of line with the trajectories of the last 50-100 years. I Googled the 5000 m world record progression and the charts are incredibly easy to interpret. If this is difficult for you to understand, or you are just dumb in general, I’m happy to jump on a zoom call and explain charts and graphs to you. I’m looking forward to the times that are run when I’m 75, and I won’t be bitter about the fact that we couldn’t run those times when I was 19.

Moron.
the track surfaces are basically unchanged over the past 20 years. BU's track has been teh same track for decades now, for example. The noticeable jump in track and road times across distances began the same year respective super shoes were released (2021 for the former or 2019 for the latter). Training methods have not changed across the board over the past four years -- you're implying all coaches of various tenures, levels, backgrounds, all changed their training approaches simultaneously and that is more likely than the next generation of footwear being released the same year times began materially improving? The only clear driver of times has been footwear releases. Sorry your PR was set in super shoes and you're hurt about it.

Adding on, you're also implying that all athletes responded similarly to these new training methods immediately. Ignoring the fact that we know many coaches are still using different approaches and the only consistent factor across the universe of running has been the adoption of modern footwear released the same year that sub 4 minute miles in the NCAA jumped from 35 to almost 100.
With all these people who criticize shoes as an unfair advantage. So is genetics yall got a solution? Or synthetic tracks? Or how about we look at what Paavo ran on with what shoes? Should we wind back the clock do make it more consistent? There were also improvements when they made tracks that didn't tear under your feet. No one was complaining about that.
