Yes, rumors point to the Magic Wizard coach. The Swedish top online coach. The proud of LR.

1. He’s probably done
2. CU has never cared about athletics and they have been fortunate to get some of the coach they have (Wetmore was an assistant and they handed him the job in the 90s AFTER he cut his hair for the interview)
3. It’s not going to be a flashy hire. They don’t pay well, they are going to struggle in the modern NCAA landscape.
My guess is a career track man. Maybe a throws or field event coach. Hire a young motivated assistant but it won’t be the same
I can see the husband/wife team of Casey & Lindsay Malone (throws/hurdles/multis) being promoted, then they turn around and find a top level distance coach to keep it rolling.
Always a Boulder bro
Just so we’re all on the same page, Wetmore obviously has the option to retire at the conclusion of this season, but if he wants to come back that doesn’t necessarily mean CU wants him back. The program needs overhauled severely. Many (over 75% of all athletes, coaches, and staff) within the program are not happy with Wetmore and Burroughs. The Malone’s would be a good option to direct the program, but be aware this could put a reduction in distance monies (scholarships). They are definitely “track & field” coaches, but hopefully would understand with a good XC coach luring top notch distance runners to CU will pay more dividends than any multi athlete, thrower, etc.
I do not think they’ll use the “Deion Sanders Experiment” when making this hire. They either hire an experienced collegiate XC coach to oversee the entire program or promote the Malone’s and bring in a quality distance coach to run the XC program.
With the possible shut down of the NAU football program, Mike Smith may want to make his way to Boulder, if so.
You can’t knock Brosnan. Not sure why anyone has ever disparaged the guy. Take away the 2 sets of brothers, he made a lot of kids fast and happy. the parents, too!

Wow. So he made some high school kids fast and some parents happy. sounds like he should be the next coach at CU base on that resume.

I know rumors can be ridiculous, but I'm hearing this from lots of coaches. Any truth to U or Colorado coach Mark Wetmore retiring?
His contract his up this year and No announcement about Wetmore getting a contract renewal. I’d say there is a very high chance he’s done after the NCAA championships next week.
Just like the weird phenomenon of the woke group, it appears that you may have determined Brosnan is no good based upon nothing, unless you know first hand information. Everyone got faster at NP, not some. What he did in a few years was just amazing.

CU has failed to protect its territory in recruiting for a while now. There have been a lot of top-level HS runners to come through Colorado in the last decade, boys and girls, and almost none of them went to CU other than Vancil. Back in the day, not only did CU get Goucher, but it got Ritz & the Torres brothers too. It would have been unfathomable for a Parker Wolfe to go to UNC a generation ago. Boulder was Flagstaff before it was Flagstaff. It is still crawling with pro runners. CU should always be a top 5 program if run properly.
Wetmore had his run. Someone needs to inject life back into that program.
Ritz was from MI and the Torres bros were from IL
What Wetmore built the program from and made it what it was is incredible and still holds some weight. However, things have changed rapidly with other programs stepping up recruiting and becoming more innovative with training. Wetmore has had the attitude in regards to recruiting for years that “they will come to us” and that simply is not enough anymore. Their traditional high mileage, hard every day model is becoming a bit antiquated and the crap that Heather Burroughs has pulled with her toxic behaviors including promoting horrible eating habits amongst other crappy sh*t has finally came to bite them in the arse. They had one of the worst NCAA team placings in decades last fall and the team dynamics seem broken. It’s time for some new blood to come in and do a complete overhaul and get up with the times. If I were Wetmore, I’d say “to hell with it” and retire before they forced me to retire and just live out the rest of my days in my paid off house in Boulder.

With his success at NAU (literally since his arrival in 2016), Smith is the biggest name in collegiate distance running so he’s in a position to make good money regardless of what happens to NAU football. He’s in a fortunate situation at the moment having so many post collegiate runners who want to work with him. It might be tough luring him away.
