My proposal for a protest that still allows biological women the chance to compete:
Sprints - biological women remain in the set position in the blocks when the gun is fired. Three seconds after the gun, they start on the sound of a whistle/air horn blown by a planted individual near the start line. While this all but assures an easy victory for the transgender athlete, the spectators will get to see a fair race amongst the biological women in the field.
Distances - same protocol but the biological women hold at the line or take one step over at the gun and hold for 10-30 seconds depending on the distance.
Jumps/Throws - all biological women agree to foul during a pre-determined round either by stepping out of the circle, stepping over the line, or by allowing the time clock to expire without making an attempt.
Male athletes can assist the cause with highly visible temporary tattoos on their arms such as #savegirlssports.
All of these measures are within the rules of the sport (the start whistle may flaunt them) and should not cause mass disqualification from the event. If the governing bodies do not set new rules to guarantee the fairness of competition, then public displays as above must happen.
Let me be very clear about this - transgender athletes should have a pathway to compete in sports but, it must put competitive fairness and athlete safety at the forefront. Threats, violence, and verbal abuse should not be tolerated under any circumstances.High school sports authorities need to show courage and address this situation immediately before protests become necessary and well before someone decides to act out in illegal ways. The fact that armed police officers are now needed at track meets tells me that we have already reached that tipping point.
