Yared ran a good race, Kerr and Jakob just had a bit more on the day. Just because he doesn't have the same bravado as Jakob and Kerr doesn't mean he is not confident. He will be racing for Gold in Paris
....
Honestly what chance would you give him of winning Olympic Gold? Me I would give him on his best day 7% max
Probably high when you factor in not making the team or falling in rounds. But let’s not forget how many dudes are right there. Does Laros drop 3s along his rapid improvement curve? Does Nordas get another 2s? Any of the Kenyans get there? Wightman find the magic one more time. And so on. We could have a final with 12 guys sub 3:31 where a good day and good positioning can make the difference.
I just hate that we have a guy fully capitalizing on the Nike cheater trampoline shoes who drafted for 1608 meters (personal pace setter) who drops a 3:43 mile. Like yeah that's an insane time but you really think this floppy kid is better than WEBB AND RUPP? shoes ruined the sport.
I guarantee you that no one who ever says "trampoline shoes" has actually tried on a pair of post 2020 spikes themselves lmfao
The fact that Nuguse is performing at such a high level shows he’s motivated. But the advice (what Bruce tells Quentin) is sound and people ought to say it—that Nuguse needs go for it, take his shot. Snarl. Whatever. Maybe Nuguse is maxing out. Maybe wanting it or appearing to want it is not a difference that makes a difference at this level. But it’s what we all want to see, what we see in Ingebritsen and Kerr, what Hodgkinson showed over the weekend, and what we never quite got with the other potential world-beater in Rupp.
So you are saying that professional distance running is the best one can hope for as a career? I love watching the sport and have been a runner all my life but there are a lot easier and better careers out there than professional running.
we're on a running message board bud, where a lot of us are fans of professional track & field & other distance running formats. Hope that helps
Nuguse is to me the most intriguing guy in what is easily the most exciting and intriguing event on the track right now (a little bias perhaps, but hey...)
He is the most naturally gifted guy - I can't see how he's not. Jakob has been on a careful regiment of training and blood lactate monitoring since what, the age of 14, Kerr and Wightman have been the sport since youngsters running XC, Harriers, track - Nuguses career started as a HS freshman when he was made to run 2 miles as part of a warmup for gym class. He was on the bowling team. Likes turtles. Didn't even realize he was remotely good until 2019.
His super relaxed attitude to the sport is undoubtedly refreshing and on some level a huge advantage in a sport where being in your own head too much is arguably the biggest hurdle for many to overcome.
And yet, there is just some X-factor I feel like he just doesn't quite have to really be a contender to win these major titles. It's obvious in Kerr and Jakob - less so in Wightman but it's still there. Not sure I see it with Jared. Not saying he can't and won't pick up a medal or two in his career - I just don't see him having the edge to really be the guy.

Wightman is more subtle about it as you said but it's absolutely there. His interview post 1:44 800m this season showed that. When asked how he felt about the race he said "it was okay, but I wanted to win it."

Nuguses was undertrained in college. which is the best of blessings. which means he has a solid base to build up. if you max out in training in your 18 to 22 age perion. you will probably have a very short carear . a one hit wonder.
this guy managed a near world record last year and a 346 opener mile this year. and you have this nonsense thread.
you cant do better than this . goose should keep on doing exactly what he is doing and make no notice of the crap here.
Sign of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Yared keeps allowing his main opponents to start their kicks and then reacts and has yet to overcome that deficit. A wiseman would eventually change his tactics but Yared has yet to change his and attack first.
