Native Houstonian here, and the heat and sun exposure definitely played a role. I was fine, but I am acclimated to these conditions. Much of my training leading up to Boston took place in 70-degree temps or higher plus the usual humidity, and I understood that slowing 15-20 seconds per mile was needed. For those who trained in colder temperatures or were amped up for the occasion and went out at their desired pace, yeah they suffered greatly.
Side note, absolutely amazing crowds this year. The stretch from Brookline to Kenmore Square was downright electric when I went through -- so loud I couldn't hear anything else. Add that to the usual standout crowd locations of Wellesley, Hereford/Boylston, etc., etc., and it was a day to remember.
