2 trophies at ncaa championships for women’s track.
4 other top 16 placings as a team at championship between the two genders. With March madness on the brain, how many sweet 16 coaches are getting fired? Final 4?
So an Athletic Director is supposed to fire and coach that just for a trophy (probably oregons highest finish across all sports this year) because we are disappointed in a freshmen men’s class and their performance?
He has won 2 trophies, I know everyone wants them winning 6 championships a year but that doesn’t happen over night (or at all).
I was pointing out that while the message boards want him fired, I bet the administration is pretty happy. Other sports at Oregon aren’t as good as their track team. I don’t believe any Oregon sports have finished top 4 in the last 2 years besides track.
So why would the AD fire the coach thats doing the best?
Also people forget the Wisconsin days. They were awesome. I remember them sweeping the podium in the mile against Ron Warhurst (people respect that guy) multiple times!
I agree. 'The Oregon mystique', Steve Prefontaine, etc are not legitimate reasons to run for Oregon in current times. Schumacher's runners are either injured or just coming off injury. High school runners should avoid the place.
If held accountable for results, his window to produce should be closing this summer.
It is astounding, to me, the lack of accountability towards JS by Nike given the almost complete demise of BTC. Shameful really.
It will be interesting to see how the U of O AD handles JS if the team does poorly this outdoor NCAA’s.
He isn’t getting talent as far as BTC is concerned. Nike should be concerned about that. Unsure how much talent he will get this Fall for U of O. If not up to Oregon standards then U of O and Nike should be concerned about that.
Through all of this BTC and U if O under performance it is competitors to Nike and the U of O that have benefited. Strategically, that should be a major long term concern.

Again, why do people care about how well the Oregon coach is doing?
Again, why do people care about how well the Oregon coach is doing?
That is like asking why do people care how the Yankees or Cowboys or Celtics coach is doing. We like these sports. And we like the iconic teams (or hate them) that are in our sport. So, as fans, we care.
I am just a bit younger than the era portrayed in The Men of Oregon (book) so a lot of the lore that I grew up with is tied to that program.
And the combined 18 NCAA championships, USATF national Championships, Olympic Trials, or Diamond League Pre meets that I have been to have created a connection between myself and the University of Oregon.
Also, one of my kids is good friends with one of the current runners, so there tends to be a lot of Duck related gossip at our dinner table.
p.s. I also ran my lifetime PR in the 5000m on the Hayward track, so the connection is strong. And even though I didn't run for the Ducks, a lot of my friends did.

Great points. Both Schumacher and Salazar were involved with doping & performance-enhancing drugs. That's a major reason for the demise of both camps.
As for the University of Oregon, it must be demoralizing for the athletes to be redshirted, injured, and kept out of races after being so outstanding in high school. And feeling demoralized is not good. Especially in rainy, cloudy, cold weather.
I thought Rheinhardt Harrison did not present a good look on Saturday. Two years removed from a 3:59 high school mile, and all he could do was run a few laps as a pacer. Not impressive. Why even go to Oregon (from Florida) if that's all you can do?
UO should go back to ithe old days and concentrate on T&F. Remove the operatives, employees, monitors, etc. affiliated with Nike, Track Town USA, Eugene Chamber of Commerce, and the Nike Store.

Ah I see now, you've been sipping the Kool aid for decades.
You can love Jerry all you want , but Jerry Schumacher is failing at U of O right now. He knows it and so does everyone watching. It’s a disaster right now.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if these young guys decide to transfer. There are plenty of other programs who don’t overtrain who would gladly take them!

As someone brought up Shalane earlier in the thread, what do you think is her fate? She is tied to Jerry and also hasn't had great results on the women's side on both teams, if I'm right about that.
I know that nobody cares except me and other people who have similar connections to Jerry, collegiate running, the next generation of young runners, the history of Hayward, the dark-side of Nike, the magic of Track Town USA, etc.
If you care about any of those things, you might care about the UO track program. My family cares. And based on the number of people who click on this thread, I think other people must have some connection (see above). If not, why would anyone click or post on these threads?
I will never understand people who click on threads AND then post about how "nobody cares about XYZ." If that were true, the thread would quickly slide to page 2 or 3. Stop posting and a thread will disappear from the front page!
Jerry is a good coach but still overrated. It's way harder to succeed at the collegiate level now than it was during his days at Wisconsin. He was terrific in that era but not the current era. He is living off outdated history and working with the most talented group of pros in the US.
Regarding his situation at UO, in simple terms he doesn't lack resources or talent. So is the lack of current success related to his coaching? I would argue it is.
I don't think the standard is national titles. But geez, you should be able to qualify for NCAA's on XC every year at UO and quite frankly be top 10 almost every year.
Most people with the support level of the institution that UO tf/xc receives would be on thin ice for the lack of results. If he walked into a disaster then I would cut him some slack but I don't think that was the case. I can't believe he walked into a situation that was worse than U of Portland or others similar.
By your third year you should be able to show positive progress. Next year will determine this.
