The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.RIP Kelvin Kiptum
Post of the week, poem is "To an Athlete Dying Young" by A. E. Housman
RIP. The running world is forever in his debt and will forever be poorer without him. I don't think anyone expected that he wouldn't spend the next decade cementing his status at the greatest marathoner to ever live. The world is a cruel place.
So sad, what a tragedy. This stuff really pains us to see such talent go to waste. So many what if's. Man this was an exciting day for running only hours earlier but I'm so bummed now.
As other pointed out its just like Wanjiru. But what also came to mind, coincidentally both died following their Chicago W.
RIP another legend, and condolences to his family.
This is beyond horrible. Beyond. Maybe the worst thing ever in the history of the sport. Tragedy, sadness. I’m sick to my stomach. Heart is broken.
A great athlete dying much too young. Very tragic and a big loss in the Running world. The Olympic marathon should be run in solemn memory of him.
What happened happened none can change it.
I have always hoped that cars would be removed from the earth.
This Is very sad. Wanjiru, Kiptum, Prefontaine...how many young talents died tragically. Life is short.

Wtf is wrong with you?
I feel the same as the day Pre died. I was in van with the track team on the way to a meet, a five hour drive, when the news came on the radio. I just remember the disbelief and then silence for a long time.
Terrible. Life is short - but should not be that short. What a talent. What a competitor. Condolences to the family and friends. And since it's Letsrun - FU to anyone who trolls. Have you no deceny?
I just want to give my condolences and RIP Kelvin, I was very impressed with his talent and ambition and as a young runner this was jaw dropping, I just finished my long run and got out of the shower and this was announced, I am heartbroken for all of us and especially the country of Kenya and his family.
This is horrible.
Still in shock, hard to comprehend this. RIP to his coach Gervais Hakizimana too, heartbreaking news today
