Rojo/Gault have you reached out to Jerry/Shalane/BTC for comment/a statement about this? Someone should be asking him/them to explain, even if we think we know why all these athletes are leaving. Or do they hope they can just let this all pass by without any statement??
Jerry will be issuing a statement at his regular biennial press conference.
People say that it is impossible to coach effectively both College and Pros at the same time and then recommend Mike Smith and Dijeet? I’m confused.
Mike Smith has said multiple times he does not have a group. Just a few individuals. The bottom line is Jerry can not coach both 100%. If he continues to be a head coach of U of Oregon and BTC. The Pro athletes at BTC will most likely not have a full time coach if this continues. Jerry is a great coach, but It’s just impossible to coach a Pro team and a top NCAA team at the same time. The athletes suffer and the coaches are laughing to the bank.
Mike Smith tells every pro runner who wants to train with him up front that NAU is his priority and pro coaching is more of a part time thing. Abdi Nur has said in interviews he and Luis basically run a workout schedule that Smith makes up for them and they only actually train with him in person maybe once or twice a week, if even that. they mainly just report their times and he bases his workouts off that. and Smith rarely travels with his athletes. Nikki Hiltz talked about this on the Coffee Club Podcast, about going to Worlds essentially alone. maybe a phone call with Smith but that was it.
Bowerman is a much bigger thing than Mike Smith Elite and despite having a vast support system I doubt Jerry could devote as much time to them.
that said, even if Jerry balanced Oregon and Bowerman equally, moving to Eugene is THE reason for all the defections. the team has been complaining about their new location at every event. the running community is small and when a team (especially one as well known as Bowerman) complains EVERYONE knows about it.
Won many US titles. But at world championships it’s always been 8th or lower. A change is needed. Doing the same thing over and over can leave your career stagnant.
8th in the world is pretty solid. I'd say our current crop of American women is probably capped at about Monson's performance in the 10,000 this year -- Elise did well in the 5,000. There is just absurd competition at the moment. People capable of 14:00-05 are in a different league.
There's just too many people that would have to have a bad day for our women to medal to make it realistic.
Well, they're 'capped' because it seems they aren't willing/able/whatever to get on the kind of doping program that would get them to the next level. In bike racing it used to be called 'cyclisme à deux vitesses', or 'cycling at two speeds'. There is zero chance of going any higher than they are without getting on the same gear as the women running 14:05.
It didn't specify where she was going next. I wonder if she joins Emma's group? it's boulder based.
It's possible. Her and Fraser are very close and Fraser joined Team Boss.
No offense to Team Boss, but it does seem a little too small-time for Elise to me. Nobody on that squad can really push Elise in the 5,000 or 10,000. Maybe she could train with the OAC crew as well though -- that'd probably be ideal for her if she wasn't a Nike athlete.
I think some good dark horse options would be Diljeet Taylor (she'd have to find Utah-based runners to train with that could actually hang, though) or Rowberry. Mike Smith would also be a solid choice, as always. Woody has shown that the training can transition between the two groups successfully.
It was done the day that Jerry agreed to be the coach at the University of Oregon. There was no way he was going to keep coaching both groups.
Actually the cracks started with:
1) miss management of the Shelby doping situation. Which tainted the image of all who remained at BTC and athletes didn’t like that Jerry still coached Shelby same day same place as BTC.
2) Unannounced move to Eugene, going against a sensible relocation to altitude for BTC athletes.
3) Jerry’s unbending one size fits all approach and spending his time on U of O athletes.
4) U of O training facilities not being properly accessible for BTC athletes.
5) All the controversy causing No women wanting to join BTC and some of the top male recruits to look elsewhere.
6) The departures of top training partners Staffords, Centro, Kincaid, the German 1500m guy.
7) This is speculation, but my guess is more deep rooted problems that caused an unhappy training/work environment.
8) those that remained gave it a year to change which is hasn’t and now Fisher, Teare, Cranny have also left.
Just imagine how different everything would be right now if only Shelby had chosen not to dope. This to me is the original trigger that set things off in this direction to where we are today.

Or if the AIU wouldn't have visited her exactly on that fateful December morning just 1 or 2 days after her last dosage.

I disagree. Even if Shelby had never doped, Jerry still would have taken the head coach job at the University of Oregon. And there is no way that Jerry was going to be able to coach Bowerman and college at the same time.
Not to mention that many of the Bowerman runners weren't happy about being forced to move to Eugene, which had nothing to do with whether or not Shelby was on the team.
you mean.. **gasps dramatically**.. the insurmountable advantage altitude training over 8000 feet for the majority of the year gives is a problem?? The world map and the thousands of athlete performances after training in relatively high altitude is a big enough clue

Not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying that by going to Team Boss, Elise will get on the same doping program as women running 14:05? Or that Elise is unwilling to do a doping program that Bowerman is doing?
