Sydney would do well to sit down and consult with Edwin Moses. Moses interview this month in TFN reveals some elements or issues he could give her insights on how to improve or approach and potentially alleviate the stress her talent puts her under.
Publisher wants a zinger. Publisher wants something to talk about when writer is invited on talk shows. Publisher pushes and pushes writer. There has to be something! Abusive father. Something or we aren't going to be able to go through with this.
I do not believe it. She didn't write the book anyway.
I believe it is very much possible; she performed poorly in Rio, which is something I had never seen her do as far back as age-group. Coming into the finish line, she didn't appear to be pushing.

Sydney needs help from a mental health professional not from a hurdler.
I actually saw her body language in that race and saw that she didnt want to advance. She ran SO many races in indoor and outdoor for high school and then the season gets stretched many months. Understandable.
honestly, i don't care that she did it, but i wish she didn't write about it. we have a generation that is gonna think it's perfectly normal to just say f-it and bail on competition. they are glorifying it at this point, after the whole Biles thing.
Kinda like how we now have an entire generation that thinks its perfectly normal to be racist after the whole Trump thing.
She didn't throw her semi... she just didn't have it mentally to qualify for the final. The mental strength to overcome that anxiety and channel it to increase performance is a skill.
It is hard to believe a WR holder, the best to ever do it, threw a race because she was nervous. The people who rise to this level of athletic accomplishment, competition is the last thing they fear, they thrive on it. It's what drives their entire life. You don't get there if that isn't you. I mean Im sure its possible, but this situation seems HIGHLY unlikely. Running bad because of nerves? sure, that can absolutely happen. But throwing it? No way.

I know this thread is about SML, but you people who constantly crap on Simone Biles are so goddamn ignorant I can't help but comment. Newsflash: gymnastics is an incredibly dangerous sport. People have become paralyzed and literally died during routines that went awry. If Simone didn't feel she could safely perform her routine, she absolutely made the right call in pulling herself out of the competition. In doing so, she not only avoided a potential life-altering/ending injury (which was most important), but also avoided dragging the team score down with a poor performance.

First of all, she wasn't the world record holder or the best to ever do it when she was in high school.
Second, clearly you don't know much about Sydney. She has an anxiety disorder. In high school it was really bad. She even had a nervous breakdown before the 2016 Olympic Trials.
Even now it's something that she struggles with, although she is somewhat better than before.
I knew about this problem back when she was in high school, and I had watched many of her high school races. The way she ran the last 100 meters of her Rio semi made me think at the time that she threw the race. She even slowed down near the line to make sure that other runners would finish ahead of her, which she had never done in previous races. Previously she always ran hard through the line. So yes, she threw that 2016 Rio semi. You not believing it has nothing to do with what actually happened.
Sydney is simultaneously the most incredible athlete and boring, vanilla human being
That’s a strong statement. Have you ever met her?
Sydney is boring when she is in the spotlight. In her personal life she is a comedian. A real goof ball. It's like she is two totally different people.
People are surprised by that, because they are used to famous people being the opposite of Sydney. There are lots of famous people who act very friendly in public and then are not nice behind the scenes. Sydney just happens to be the opposite of how many other famous people are.

A pretty shallow and insensitive view on mental health with your post. If you've ever been in a high stress situation which has led to paralyzing anxiety it's nothing to belittle or mock. Maybe you're able to manage your anxiety better than most, I will say that many elite athletes experience some sort of anxiety during their career. My guess is that you've never experienced what world class athletes go through mentally due to you never have been a world class athlete.
Does anybody remember Suzy Favor Hamilton in the home stretch? She admitted she was looking for a place to fall. Even though these athletes are the best in the world, doesn't mean they don't have panic attacks, anxiety, etc. The are mortal.

that's not what my comment was about. she was named the damn person of the year by time magazine for it. that is ridiculous.

Sensitivity is relative to the times... the poster has a very valid point and it's OK for them to make it. Being able to push through high anxiety situations is definitely something to be proud of. No need to attack the poster.
