A couple days ago it was reported that his agent said he would run Chicago; however, due to late start in training his goal was simply a new course record not the World Record.
Nice too see you're back Renato Canova!
I think it’s Kiptum downplaying expectations. He started in June and it sounds like a rainy summer interfered with some of his training. But he’s admitting he thinks 2:02-2:03 is the target which you can’t be targeting if these were major hiccups. We’ll see if he says more in the presser.

2:03:45 is going down on Sunday. Looks like perfect conditions & more than a few guys who could do it. I think Kiptum either runs 2:01 or is a DNS/DNF. I'd watch out for Kipruto. Super consistent results at this level. Not a ton of fast marathon attempts on good weather days. But what he did in Boston 2021 tells me he's ready for something fast on the right day. Could see him or Abdi running 2:03:30 FTW & the CR.
Mateiko is obviously intriguing too with his super fast half. Maybe what separates him from some other half marathon specialists is that he has experience pacing fast marathons. So we know he can get to 30k with the leaders. Should make for an interesting wrinkle. Should still be 5 or 6 guys in it with 10k to go, especially if the opening half pace is set to something closer to 1:02.

Mateiko would be my 2nd place pick. I think he can debut in 2:03:xx.
What is going to be the pacing in Chicago? Who are the pacers and what pace are they going to run at?
Benard Ngeno who paced London this year and is 59:07 and 2:07 runner and maybe Ronald Kirui? (59:38 HM PB) bid 84. Zouhair Talbi said he's pacing 2nd group, not sure what the pace will be though
Bernard Ngeno is pacing the lead group in Chicago. Serious business!

I've also put him number 1 or number 2 a couple of weeks ago. We agree this time :)
A very interesting race. Will be very entertaining to watch.....
I guess the officials want an opening in around 61 min first half from the pacemaker and then we will see if Kelvin can finish as fast as in London to challenge the world record. A very fascinating runner this Kelvin Kiptum. Some time ago I chat with him and asked how he trains. He told me he is self- coached and a normal training week looks like track intervals on Tuesdays and a fast temporun another day and two longer runs. Seems similar training as all the other Kenyan stars during the years...🧙♂️🇸🇪
